UnicodeChecker 1.14

October 11, 2009

earthlingsoft today released version 1.14 of UnicodeChecker, the most comprehensive tool for exploring and working with the Unicode character set on Mac OS X. UnicodeChecker remains free to use and this update includes the most recent Unicode data along with other improvements.

Version 5.2 of the Unicode standard was released on October 8, 2009 and is included in this version of UnicodeChecker. It is also compatible with the “Unihan” files – a comprehensive database of Asian characters and information about them – which was updated to a new format in Unicode 5.2. These files can be downloaded from UnicodeChecker with a single click. The current version 1.7 of Adobe's Glyph List For New Fonts is also included.

UnicodeChecker 1.14 supports Mac OS X’s Spotlight and Quick Look technologies to add all Unicode codepoints to the Mac’s Spotlight index and make them accessible via Spotlight searches. Using Quick Look a preview of the found characters can be displayed without needing to launch the application.

This version also introduces a new “Length” utility which displays the number of code units and bytes a string requires in the UTF-8, -16 and -32 encodings. Other utilities have been improved, adding drag and drop capabilities to the “Split Up” utility and additional options to the “Escape” utility.

UnicodeChecker’s rich display of Unicode data, conversion and search facilities along with its ability to integrate with other applications via AppleScript and System Services remain present. In fact, Apple’s recently released Mac OS X 10.6 operating system greatly improves the user interface for System Services, thus giving a better experience to UnicodeChecker users.
