earthlingsoft today released version 1.15 of UnicodeChecker, the most comprehensive tool for exploring and working with the Unicode character set on Mac OS X. This update includes the most recent Unicode data and support for the updated Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) specification.UnicodeChecker’s rich display of Unicode data, conversion and search facilities along with its ability to integrate with other applications via AppleScript and System Services make it a valuable tool for anyone interested in or working with Unicode. UnicodeChecker also supports the “Unihan” files of the Unicode standard – a comprehensive database of Asian characters and information about them. The Unihan files are not included but can be downloaded from UnicodeChecker with a single click.
Version 6.0 of the Unicode standard was released on October 11, 2010 and is included in this version of UnicodeChecker. Unicode 6.0 adds 2,088 characters and now encodes a total of 109,242 graphic characters.
UnicodeChecker 1.15 now implements the updated specification of Internationalized Domain Names for Applications (IDNA) that was released in August 2010 by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). IDNA specifies multilingual Internet domain names that may contain characters outside of the traditionally allowed character set for domain names (hyphens, digits and the english alphabet). In order to work with the existing Domain Name System (DNS), Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) must be represented in the traditional character set internally. IDNA therefore defines a conversion between Unicode strings and the equivalent DNS representation. UnicodeChecker supports IDNA conversions according to both, the recently updated and the previous IDNA specification.
UnicodeChecker supports Mac OS X’s Spotlight and Quick Look technologies to add all Unicode codepoints to the Mac’s Spotlight index and make them accessible via Spotlight searches. Using Quick Look a preview of the found characters can be displayed without needing to launch the application.
UnicodeChecker is provided free of charge. earthlingsoft welcome donations and user comments.
