Coimbra

104 words on

Today we went to see the sights in Coimbra, including the old university, that used to be the emperor's castle, with its impressive, highly decorated historical library, the cathedral and some other old buildings.

A feature common to most of them is that they have white tiles with mostly blue patterns or even pictures on the walls called Azulejos. Sometimes on the inside, sometimes on outside house walls, even as decoration inside churches, these tiles can be seen. It looks quite pretty. I've heard that they originated as some kind of lazy-person's mosaic and became an art of their own then.
