Phone

Ancient German standard telephone Wow. Today I got my new office phone. This was actually easier than I expected. Much easier. The original phone I had easily outdated myself – being manufactured in 1971 and still having a rotary dial. All that in a tasteful shade of grey. It's not that I didn't like the phone per se – the sensation of actually dialling a number is quite nice (for short numbers at least) and the actual ringing of old phones is hard to beat by the moronic beeps modern phones dare to pollute the air with.

So I would have gladly kept the old one. If it hadn't been for the big but: There must have been a lot of dirt or so in the phone, causing a lot of static in any call. A lot on my side and apparently even more on the other side – judging from what other people said.

While this problem has been around ever since I moved into the office, I was reluctant to do anything about it. Partly because I liked the phone and partly because I feared getting a new one would be an extremely painful bureaucratic ordeal – involving the central telecoms place in university in all.

I was right about the central place but I was wrong about their helpfulness. I phoned there on Friday. They immediately acknowledged the obvious problem, made a few flattering remarks about the old phone, confirmed my room number and today I had a new phone. Smooth.

Newer standard German Phone The new phone has keys and is a newer German standard phone. It's colour is a tasteful shade of beige. Of course it's purely analogue and has no display. But it does have a mute button. But the best thing about it: It's probably the phone model with the best keypad ever. The keys have to be pressed lightly but still giving firm feedback to your fingers. Perfect for speed dialling. Sort of the Extended II of telephone keypads...
