Redundancy

168 words

Redundancy may be good and even vital in areas like engineering but it's horrible when it comes to information. As soon as you have two copies of the same bit of information, one of them will be out of date.

The other day we tried to find out what, when and where seminars will be in our department next term. It turned out that our immense technical infrastructure, maintained by almost a handful of people has five different places containing overviews of seminar-related information. Each of them is incomplete, outdated, linking nowhere, simply broken or a pain to use in its own way. And that's before you get to see that things are out of sync.

What's wrong with those people? Why can't I have an easy to use one-stop solution for this, complete with links to the relevant people. – Actually I wanted to demand downloadable 'ics' calendar files and perhaps RSS feeds as well... but providing those simple text files may be too hard to achieve.
