I have been worried about the way the processes of different users and their access to hardware is handled ever since Steffen and me played around with ASCII Quicktime goodness and realised that when logging onto the machine via ssh and playing a Quicktime film on the command line there, the sound would come from the remote machine's speakers.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of control over who may use the sound output and who may not. That's probably a bad thing which may or may not be related to the equally bad fact that no two users may have launched iTunes at the same time. Surely this should be allowed if things were done properly. I wonder whether there have been incidences at computer labs yet, where students started playing an mp3 on every single machine using remote logins...
