Wir sind Rottweiler

361 words

While the whole story around the old pope’s death was a bit annoying due to all the media attention it attracted, the new one’s ‘election’ (fun note: there was a bit of trouble because the close friend of the old pope, Robert Mugabe, wanted to hang out at the pope’s funeral – but he may not enter the EU… so they chickened out for some ‘transit’ thing rather keeping him out altogether. My mum said that after the funeral they had cartoons in African newspapers with Mugabe seeing the way they vote the new pope – no talking about it and burning the evidence afterward – and that he was so pleased with it that he plans to use it in his next elections…).

And now the whole media rubbish starts over again. All for a one line news item. Add a backstory that the new pope is from Germany and ultra-conservative (apparently the choice of a name that requires a high number to go with it is a strong hint for that). Of course we didn’t expect the catholics to want to a leader who is forward thinking, young or even good looking. But couldn’t they have done better?

Anyway, this seems to trigger really fun news headlines – all going over the same picture’. While German trash daily ‘Bild’ titled Wir sind PapstWe are pope today, which I find rather insulting as this is even worse than their usual Wir sind Weltmeister junk. On the other hand, the British Mirror seems to have titles ‘god’s Rottweiler’ which is fun. They also don’t fail to inform their readers of Rottweiler Ratzinger’s membership in the Hitler youth right in the second paragraph and offer some extra info under the topic of Panzer cardinal. Well done, tastefully. But not as well done as the Sun which just seems to go with From Hitler Youth to… Papa Ratzi. Erm, great humour. There may be many bad and dangerous things about this man but the fact that he was a member of the Hitler youth as a teenager isn’t at the top of the list.

But it’s a good start. :)

Sure it’s fun to take a piss regarding the pope.

But I’m not sure this is the right way. Not only does the English press have severe problems with reporting about anything distantly German without crying ‘Nazi!’ at the same time. This will also keep people from looking at the real problems.

And it gives the German junk press more fuel for their own game. As seen today:

English insult German pope.

There we go… let’s see what happens next.

More comment on the UK press reaction in Der Spiegel’s English pages.

And the daily tageszeitung didn’t disappoint with yesterday’s titlepage either.
