Wir sind Helden in English

482 words on

There are already a few Wir sind Helden pages on this site with lyrics for a few songs and translations of those lyrics into English.

When Caro came across this site she mentioned that she had done many more translations herself which she’d share with people who are interested. Later on other people joined in and contributed translations for some of the newer songs or alternate translations for old songs. So here they are – a pretty complete collection of translations for the lyrics of Wir sind Helden’s songs. Thanks a lot to everybody who contributed!

If you want to contribute your own translations use the comment field at the bottom of the page, if you are looking for original German Wir Sind Helden lyrics, take them from the horse’s mouth and look at the lyrics section of their web site.

Comment by Caro / Ist das so: User icon

[ ] mean
- that you can’t really translate that word / expression but I did my best to find another appropriate word / saying in English or
- I added an explanation

Is it that way?

Is it that way that your heart beats the day into hours –
Is it that way? I mean does it have to be that way?
Is it that way that your look saws the world into discs
Is it that way? I mean does it have to be that way?

Your way has to be stony you have to be tormented
You must be crazy if you agree with yourself too quickly
Use every gap midge box yourself big and bend yourself small
Only the one who laughs alone is allowed to be petty in the end

Did you listen you must not praise the day before work
And after work you bluster in look-step through the evening
Do you want to flounder forever between nothing and above
Do you feel in good hands say do you feel in good hands?

When did we take the vote who suggested this?
I think it is surely right but I wanted to ask tell me:
Is it that way? I mean does it have to be that way?
Is it that way? I mean does it have to be that way?
Is that so or is it maybe much easier?

Is this tomorrow worse a life without today?
Is it worse it never to resist the pack?
What is a luck worse that only honours the pharmacist
Is everyone who never complains in the end really carefree? [wordplay in German!]

You can wave as long as you want with your rules
As long as rules as a rule only [ennoble] the speaker
You go on damning the wind in your sluggish sails
As far as I know you can’t even [sorry, there’s no verb for this in English that I could find, literary it means: tell how much rain has fallen - wordplay in German]

Comment by Caro / Rüssel an Schwanz: User icon

Hinter jeder Kurve goldene Bananen
Trampelpfade Hintermann was brauchst du mehr

Trunk to tail

Heavy steps the rumpling caravans are rolling
Deeper into the wood we flatten the plane trees
Nobody knows why to where but everyone senses
Behind every corner golden bananas

Voilà [here is] inspiration

In our ring of eyelashes the flies are at war with each another
Who is disturbed by the bees who badger us [direct translation: who are in our ears]
When fat bodies lull themselves in profound peace
And broad foreheads nestle up to broad asses

Voilà integration

And you walk behind trunk to tail
Dirt track backer what more do you need
The most smallest that are way to small to
Have to get their trunk soldered to the tail before them
Blindly they go lost otherwise every hundred meters
And make the snakes blush in the undergrowth

Voilà assimilation

To wallow a bit to court someone’s favour a bit to wave with the ears a bit
Blinked shortly Uhh! Lost the track already
To blubber a bit to run a bit and then, crush! into the back
Into the missed tails grope grab tussels, lock in place – great

And you walk after the others trunk to tail…

Comment by Caro / Guten Tag: User icon

Guten Tag

Meine Seele gegen eure sanfte Epilation
Tausche blödes altes Leben gegen neue Version
Guten Tag guten Tag ich will mein Leben zurück
Guten Tag guten Tag ich will mein Leben zurück…

Good Day/Hello [“good day” seems a bit too old-fashioned]

My voice against a mobile phone
My fists against your nail maintaining lotion
My teeth against those of Dr. Best and his son
My soul against you soft epilation

It was a sell-out a special offer a clearance
Exchange silly old life against new version
I had just tried it out at home then I already knew
This product is broken – this is the complaint

Hello hello I want my life back
I don’t exchange anymore I want my life back
Hello I admit I was delighted at first
But your life only does not pinch and press
If you bend -
Hello

My voice against the whole talk show nation
My fist for a tired alleluia and beans
My teeth against your tame revolution
Visions against the total television

It was a sell-out a special offer a clearance

Hello hello I want my life back…

Denkmal

Komm mal ans Fenster komm her zu mir
Siehst du da drüben gleich da hinterm Wellblechzaun
unser Abbild in Stein gehauen

Memorial

We received a text message for you
The message reads:
Mission 1 completed exclamation mark Posters 8, Claims 0.
Mission 2 will follow. Fetch the sledgehammer

Come to the window come over to me
Do you see over there right there behind the corrugated-iron fence
Over there on the square in front of Aldi [cheap supermarket] they have
Carved this monument into the stone

Come on to the street come over to me
Everywhere flowers and garlands halfway crumpled up
Looks like they have revealed our monument tonight
Already without us

Get the sledgehammer
They have built us a monument
And every blithering idiot knows
That this spoils up love
I will engage the worst sprayers
Of this town
They are supposed to smear
The remnants with slogans at night

Get up come over to me
It’s getting light soon and we don’t have eternal time
If someone catches us here now we’d be united forever
In concrete and salvation

Get the sledgehammer
They have built us a monument
And every blithering idiot knows
That this spoils up love
I will engage the worst sprayers
Of this town
They are supposed to smear
The remnants with slogans at night

Do you see the inscription over there near the shoes
There it is written in golden letters we shall rest in eternity

Interpretation: Just listen to Judith!:

Translation:
„This is Judith Holofernes from Wir sind Helden and we’re explaining a song to you. Er this song is called Memorial. When I wrote it I thought about couples who are building themselves a memorial in blandishing themselves to be so great and stabile. And I think this is quite fatal because memorials can’t ever move and if something happens to them from the outside they’re getting cracks or doves are pooping on them and I think that’s not that healthy.”

Comment by Caro / Du erkennst mich nicht wieder: User icon

You don’t recognise me

You don’t recognise me Alone My face was still the same And you don’t know if that’s enough For not being alone

You don’t recognise me Unrecognised I ran half of the night Around the houses

I don’t recognise anything here Everything tired and old And I’m painting both of us As outlines in chalk On the concrete

You don’t recognise me Unrecognised Over there in the park I’ve burned my clothes

I don’t recognise me Only my heart that still beats And I lift up my arms To see if the warm Air of the night carries me

You don’t recognise me Unrecognised I’m flying to the end of the town To the end of the world And over the brink

Comment by Caro / Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder: User icon

Du bleibst kaum kannst du laufen alle zwei Meter stehen

Du kannst kaum grade laufen bleibst alle zwei Meter stehen

Time heals all wonders

Time heals all wonders
[wordplay in German: proverb: Die Zeit heilt alle WundeN, Judith changed it into “WundeR”]

If you lash them up right
Just ligature the spot
Until you don’t feel it any more
You know that a fire goes out
If you don’t rake it for a longer time
And you know that you better
Don’t touch old wonders

And even the greatest wonder will go by
And if it does not let you go count to three
And it will pass [(by) in German it is both “pass” and “pass by”] it will pass (by)
It will pass (by) it will pass (by)

Time heals all wonders
Already after a few years
Time heals all wonders
Already after a few years
Only scars where wonders have been

You come onto earth to turn its head
You laugh about dogs and you own toes
You will stop every two meters just after you learned how to walk
And fall on your knees to see another wonder

And at the next wonder they push you on
The one who holds your arm counts to three
And it will go by it will pass (by)
It will pass (by) it will pass (by)

Time heals all wonders…

When will you finally learn not to turn your head
You fall over dogs and your own toes
You cannot even walk straight (you) stop every two meters
And fall on you knees so that the wonders will see you

And the 10th wonder passes you
You pray that it stops count to three
And it will pass (by) it will pass (by)
And it will pass (by) it will pass (by)

Time heals all wonders…
Time heals and everyone wonders after all these years
That nothing leaves but a few hours where once wonders have been

Monster

Jetzt stehst du da in deiner Drachentöterhose

Raus

Monster

Now you’re standing there in your [dragon-killer-pants]
You say you want me and you move in with me
You know that I like you and even like the roses
But you know that I don’t live here on my own

I think you can hear it there in the next room
Do you hear it breathing do you hear it scratching on the wall?
Think of a big animal and then think of it being even worse –
My monster doesn’t bite it eats you

[wordplay in German: “jmdn. aus der Hand fressen” = to eat s.th. out of s.o.’s hand = to be friendly]

Can you hold my monster
Can you hold my monster
Can you hold my monster
Can you can you?

A voracious fire warms up his limbs
His breath burns his look is dead and cold
My monster is blind it stamps down everything
If it breaks free then maybe will you call out Stop?

Do you see the sharp claws?
Do you see the teeth?
Do you hear the rumbling deep in his stomach?
I can see your legs shaking –
Just to mention it –
If I notice it my monster will notice it too

Can you hold my monster – can you stand it?
Can you hold my monster – if not
Leave

Heldenzeit

Krieger führen Schurken starten solidarisch weiterraten Bomben warten

Dotcomsterben doch nichts erben Brot erwerben Traum in Scherben - weiter werben

Time for heroes

Warriors lead villains head off
[wordplay: “Schurken starten” resembles “Schurkenstaaten” which means rogue nations]
solidly go on guessing bombs waiting
Fly save seeing cities don’t make grandpa turn in his grave stand straight
Breasts of heroes swell emerging nation is burnt down
[wordplay: old song from World War II: “Pulverland ist abgebrannt”]
fast ashore
Assure giggle go on please nothing to see – nothing happened
People’s Parties lane in the middle in case of emergency confine only to the hairstyle of the hairdryer
Initial public offer swan song
[German proverb, translation maybe:] cling together, swing together / in for a penny, in for a pound / if you hang with ‘em you get hanged with ‘em]
everyone’s trembling
Dying of dotcoms do not inherit anything win bread [“Broterwerb” = breadwinning] dream in pieces – go on promoting
And a tired model counts full of frustration the hairs on the breast of the hero – again no lust
Let us pass let us pass we are doctor
Let us pass let us pass let us pass pass pass
Welcome in the time heroes are you all set are you all set
Time of heroes time of heroes are you all set
Did anyone say it is the time of heroes?
Welcome in the time heroes are you all set are you all set
Time of heroes time of heroes are you all set
We’re coming here to wash our hand of the other heroes
Woke up with Mittermeier [left-winged popular German comedian] joined in until midnight end of that [German proverb!]
0190 [expensive prefix for phonesex] or never

[German proverb: “Jetzt oder nie” = Now or never]
everyone knows the melody of masturbation
Jubilation hurly-burly marital row
[German saying: “Jubel, Trubel, Heiterkeit” = jubilation, hurly-burly, cheerfulness]
pain is trump popular on time are you sick of it?
Lost the game shaven pierced to death and born anew – and start over
Booze have a scrap christen children run into the fire
[German saying: “Vom Regen in die Traufe” = jump out of the frying pan into the fire]
go on buying
The wealth makes us all poor poverty makes us tame – alert
Chic became entangled too fat fortunately send in one peace bend to low money back
Do you need that do you smoke that is that fun look into the glass do you see something
tell me do you see something?
Let us pass let us pass we are doctor
Let us pass let us pass let us pass pass pass

Comment by Caro / Aurélie: User icon

Aurélie’s accent is very charming without question
Even when she keeps still she is noticed as being wonderful
She does not have to be sparing with her attraction
Because her hair is sea and wheat
Even bald everyone will adore her

But Aurélie never gets it
Every evening she asks herself
When will someone fall in love with me

Aurélie that way it will never work
You are expecting much to much
The Germans flirt very subtle

Aurélie the men like you a lot here
Look on the street everyone looks at you
But you don’t notice anything because they don’t whistle
And if you do they flee
You have to know less is more here

Oh Aurélie in Germany love needs time
Here you are ready for the first steps after days
For the next weeks you talk
You size each other up the most thoroughly
And after that you meet anywhere twosome

Aurélie that way it will never work…

Aurélie it’s just not that simple
Here different words are of different importance
All the boys lying at your feet
Want to kiss these also the cute ones
But you don’t notice it
If he’s talking about soccer at the same time

Oh Aurélie you say I shall explain it to you
How on earth Germans are reproducing
If all the flowers and the bees do nothing but smirking in Berlin
And don’t give a damn about questions of pollination

Aurélie that way it will never work…

Comment by Caro / Müssen nur wollen: User icon

Just have to want

Do I always have to have to everything that I can
One hand carries the world and the other one offers drinks?
I can with every ten feet in twenty doors
And with the eleventh in the nose
Perform ballets
But if I could do as I can I would not want anything at all
But I know that everyone has to want something –

We can do everything just like the great / mad [the original meaning of “toll” was mad but nowadays it is mostly used as “great” – both interpretation seem possible here]
Trained monkeys we just have to want
We just have to want we just have to want
We just have to

Do I always have to have to everything that I can
One hand in the stars
And the other one in the ass of the man in front?
This is the country of the bordered impossibilities
We can ride horses without legs backwards
We can dilate everything that is too narrow with the percussion drill
We can be happy and nevertheless lead consolidated companies

We can do everything just like the great / mad
Trained monkeys we just have to want
We just have to want we just have to want
We just have to

Außer dir

Ich stehe völlig neben mir
Nicht glücklich weil nicht neben dir
Und ich
rufe dich nur an
um dich zu fragen
kann es sein
dass ich
bei meinem letzten Besuch
bei dir
verlor was ich jetzt such

ziehen ohne mich aufs Land
Ich bin außer dir
Ich bin außer dir
Ich bin außer dir
gar nicht hier

Ich betrink mich ohne Maß
Sieht keiner hin
ess ich das Glas auf
Ich mach nur den Geiern noch Spaß
und ich beiß deinen Namen ins Gras

Du bringst mich um
Schlaf und Verstand
Für dich geb ich dem
Wahnsinn die Hand
und Rand und Band
ziehen ohne mich aufs Land
Ich bin außer dir
Ich bin außer dir
Ich bin außer dir
gar nicht hier

Except you

I’m standing completely beside myself
Not happy because not next to you
And I
Only call you
To ask
Could it be
That I
At my last visit
At yours
Lost what I’m searching for

I feel unwell
Without head in the tram
That’s why I learn to ride a bike headless
And I probably know
By the years
I will learn to save face at the same time

You kill me / You mulct me of
[wordplay in German because both translations at the same time]

Sleep and reason
For you I shake hands
With insanity
And the Beside and the Oneself (play of words in German)
Move to the country without me
I am beside you
I am beside you
I am beside you
I am beside you

I drink beyond all measure
Nobody looks there
I eat the glass
I’m only fun for the vultures
And I’m biting your name into the grass

(to bit into the bucket = ins Gras beißen in German)

You kill me / You mulct me of
Sleep and reason
For you I shake hands
With insanity
And the Beside and the Oneself
Move to the country without me
I am beside you / without you / except you
I am beside you / without you / except you
I am beside you / without you / except you
I am beside you / without you / except you
Just not here

Comment by Caro / Die Nacht: User icon

The night

Turn out the lights –
As an exception do not turn them out

[wordplay in German because of line skip: “Mach die Lichter aus- (aus)nahmsweise mal nicht aus” – both at the same time]

Place yourself next to me here at the window
And look out into the night
Can you see the moon has built a binocular
With which he looks into our bedroom at night
Who would have thought of that
That the moon is doing that

The night is only about you
She wants to be with you even at daytime
The night is only about you
And you fell asleep, though

Let in the night
Don’t let it in out of caution

[wordplay in German because of line skip: Lass die Nacht doch rein aus Vorsicht mal nicht rein both at the same time!]

The wind pretends to be so tame but if you let it
It will bed at ours

The night is only about you…
And when you sigh the world will fall apart
Motors stutter every traffic light turns red
You did not even wake up
Because of the heartthrob of the night
The night is only about you

… just as I am

Comment by Caro / Wenn es passiert: User icon

* Album „Von hier an blind“:*

mein Verstand verliert

When it happens

One heartbeat only for me
And the ones who are with me
Eyes open, look at that
Those who don’t have tears for this will go blind tomorrow
If you don’t love this, what instead
Everyone should love it as much as he can

One lightning stroke only for me
And the ones who are with me
Those who doubt now do not see clear
No matter how much of this the time will take
Those who blink have not been there

Maybe it is really just one year
But I never want to ask where I have been
Where have I been as this was true

I want to be there
When time freezes
I want to be there
When it explodes
And when by that
My mind trails away / loses
I want to be there
When it happens

A heart, a beat, a lightning
For those who are lonely
Eyes open look at that
Do you really want to count how time goes by / trickles off
When the world can do s.th. like this

Maybe it is really just one year

Echolot

Halt still
Das Bett ist ein Floß
und ich will
raus aufs Meer komm schneid es
los schau
unter uns flüssiges Blei
graue
Schatten ziehen träge vorbei

Sterne und Wasser
Und wir dazwischen
Komm, wir schwimmen
mit den großen Fischen

Ich seh dein Herz
Dein Echolot
Schlägt Wellen in die See
Ich seh dein Herz
Das bisschen rot
Tut nicht lange weh
Ich seh dein Herz
Bleib noch nicht stehen
Ich häng an deinem Mund
Ich seh dein Herz
Ich weiß wir gehen
Tiefer auf den Grund

Hier
Unten tanzt glitzernd der Staub
Wir sinken
selig und taub stumm
wartend und leise ziehen
die Schatten engere Kreise

Echo-sounder

Keep still
The bed is a float
And I want
Out on the sea come on cut it free
Look
Under us fluid lead
Grey shadows drift by sluggishly

Stars and water
And us in between
Come on, we swim
With the big fish

I see your heart
Your echo-sounder
Causes a stir [or directly:] produces waves in the sea
I see your heart
That bit of red
Does not hurt long
I see your heart
Do not stop / stand still yet
I’m attached to your mouth
I see your heart
I know that we go
Deeper onto the sea bed / we get to the bottom of this

Down
Here the dust is dancing glittering
We’re sinking
Blessedly / overjoyed and deaf
dumb / silent
Waiting and silently
The Shadows are drilling smaller circles

Comment by Caro / Von hier an blind: User icon

Von hier an blind

Zwischen zwei Fragen
In der Lücke zwischen zwei Tagen blieb
nichts mehr zu sagen
Kein Leid mehr zu beklagen und ich
Nahm den Wagen
Und ging vor ihm auf die Knie
Ich sagte:
Ich weiß nicht weiter
War ich noch nie

Ich und der Wagen
Und der Bienenschwarm im Magen
Und die Straße die zu schlagen war
Wir haben uns vertragen aber
Vor zwei Tagen
Ging der Wagen in die Knie

Er sagte
Ich weiß nicht weiter
War ich noch nie

Ich weiß nicht weiter
Ich weiß nicht, wo wir sind
Ich weiß nicht weiter
Von hier an blind
Von hier an blind
Von hier an

Ich und mein Magen
Und der Kopf in meinem Kragen gingen
blind getragen von zwei Füßen
Die nichts sagen
Außer:

Gib dich geschlagen

Blind from here / henceforth (?)

Between two questions
In the gap between two days
Stayed
Nothing to stay
No complaints to lament and I
Took the cart
And fell on my knees before it
I said:

I’m at a loss
I have never been [further] [play of word because of line skip in German: “Ich weiß nicht weiter” = I’m at a loss, but “weiter war ich noch nie” = I’ve never been further!]

Me and the cart
And the swarm of bees in the gastric
And the road that was to be beaten
We got along but
Two days ago
The cart fell on its knees

It said:
I’m at a loss
I have never been [further]

I’m at a loss
I don’t know where we are
I’m at a loss
Blind from here
Blind from here
From here

Me and my gastric
And the head in my collar went
On blindly carried by two feet
Which say nothing
Except:

Give up
And fall onto your knees
I said:
I’m at a loss
I’ve never been

I’m at a loss

And not even 1000 m away from the gate
A boom sounded and a male choir sang
Then there was silence and inbetween and before
The break gave me new ideas above my station
And I

I’m at a loss

Zuhälter

Sollen wir uns zügeln?
Oh je.
Stört das beim Bügeln?
Okay:

Zuhälter Halt!
Zuhälter Halt!
Zuhälter Halt!
Zuhälter, haltet euch raus
Aus meiner Liebe
Raus aus meiner Liebe

Ihr schickt meine Liebe
auf die Straße
In zu engen Hosen
In billigen Posen
Sie soll ihre Runden drehen
Mit den Kunden gehen
Und wir sollen verstehen
Das ist das kälteste Gewerbe-

Ihr schickt meine Liebe
auf die Straße
Um für euch zu laufen
Sie soll sich verkaufen
Sie soll mit jedem mit
Ein kleiner Ritt
Ist ein großer Schritt für
Das kälteste Gewerbe
der Welt

Zuhälter Halt!

Ihr schickt meine Lieder
auf die Straße
In zu engen Hosen
In billigen Posen
Sie sollen ihre Runden drehen
Mit den Kunden gehen
Und wir sollen verstehen
Das ist das kälteste Gewerbe-

Ihr schickt meine Lieder

Ihr schickt unsere Lieder

Um für euch zu laufen
Sie sollen sich verkaufen

Ein kleiner Schritt
Ist ein Schritt zum Hit
für das kälteste Gewerbe
der Welt

Pimp(s)

[Zuhälter can be both singular and plural in German therefore it could also be plural but I don’t think it really matters]

Shall we restrain ourselves?
Oh no
Does it disturb while ironing?

[Judith always laughs but is at the same time furious about radio stations which test their music with housewives who don’t like exceptional music while ironing therefore this music is not played. I think this might have played a role when she wrote the lyrics because the whole song is about record labels and the abuse of music!]

Okay

Pimp Stop!
Pimp Stop!
Pimp Stop!
Pimp keep out
of my love
Out of my love

You send out my love
Out on the street
In pants which are clinging too much
In cheap poses
It has to do its rounds
Go with the customers
And we have to understand
This is the coldest trade –

You send out my love
Out on the street
To go for you
It has to sell itself
It has to go with everyone
A little ride
Is a big step for
The coldest trade
Of the world

Pimp Stop!

You send my songs
Out on the street
In pants which are clinging too much
In cheap poses
They have to do their rounds
Go with the customers
And we have to understand
It is the coldest trade –

You send my songs
Out on the street

They have to sell themselves
They have to go with everyone
A little ride

For the coldest trade
Of the world

Pimp Stop!

A little step
Is a step to the hit
For the coldest trade
Of the world

Comment by Caro / Ein Elefant für dich: User icon

An elephant for you

I see both of us, you’re long since too heavy
For my arms but I don’t let you go
I know your monsters are just like mine
And with these you better don’t stay alone
I know I know I know and [I] don’t ask
Hold on to me / hold tight, get on, I will carry you
I’m getting gigantic for you
An elephant for you
I’m carrying you for miles (and on)
[wordplay: meilenweit = for miles, meilenweiter = further than miles, new word created by Judith g]
Across the land
And I
Carry you as far as I can
I carry you as far as I can
And at the end of the path when I have to
I carry you
Carry you over the river
One
[in German it is clear that it is a male]
that shouldn’t cries on the telephone
And one [female] that did not want
Cries and already knows it
Your legs don’t carry you as they should do
So often those go / leave
Who did not want to go away
I know I know and I don’t stand it
Hold on to me / hold tight, get on, I will carry you
I’m getting gigantic for you
An elephant for you

Comment by Caro / Darf ich das behalten: User icon

Darf ich das behalten

Bitte darf ich das behalten
Behalt meine alten Träume
Kannst sie verwalten wie du willst
Halt die Welt in deiner Gewalt
Aber nimm deine kalten Hände
von meiner Hand

Ich geb dir meinen Verstand dafür
Ich geb dir mein Wort ich will
Für immer stumm sein aber
Nimm das nicht fort von mir
Ich weiß du nimmst alles
Was du willst zu dir
Aber das hier bleibt hier

Darf ich das behalten
Ich geb alles her
Darf ich das behalten
Ich brauche nichts mehr
Darf ich das behalten
Ich brauche nichts mehr als das
Ich brauche nichts mehr als das
Ich brauche nichts mehr

Darf ich das behalten
Ich hab’s gefunden
Zerknittert und scheu
Saß es zwischen zwei Stunden
Bevor alles neu war
Und zwischen zwei Blicken
Zwei Schritten im Sand
Fand ich’s in meiner Hand

Ich geb dir meinen Verstand dafür
Ich geb dir mein Wort ich will
Für immer stumm sein aber
Nimm das nicht fort von mir
Ich weiß du nimmst alles
Was du willst zu dir

Lauf hinter ihm her und dann
Läuft es mir nach und ich
Halt es geborgen in meiner Hand
Schlaf bis zum Morgen
Mit dem Rücken zur Wand

Ich geb dir meinen Verstand dafür
Ich geb dir mein Wort

Am I allowed to keep this/Can I keep this

Please can I keep this
(You can) Keep my old dreams
(You can) Administer them like you want to
Have the world in your power
But take your cold hands
From my hand

I give you my mind / sanity in exchange
I give you my word [=I swear], I will
Be forever dumb but
Don’t take that from me
I know that you take everything
That you want for you
But this will stay here

Can I keep this
I will give away everything
Can I keep this
I don’t need anything anymore
Can I keep this
I don’t need anything more than that
I don’t need anything more than that
I don’t need anything more than that
I don’t need anything anymore

Can I keep this
I’ve found it
Crumpled and shy
It sat between two hours
Before everything was new
And between two glances
Two steps in the sand
I’ve found it in my hand

I give you my mind / sanity in exchange
I give you my word, I will
Be forever dumb but
Don’t take that from me
I know that you take everything
That you want for you
But this will stay here

Can I keep this
I’ve found it

[couldn’t find a translation for “zerschunden”, maybe scratched / scarred?]

and lame
Have bandaged its wounds
And now it is tame

You see it does not find the path
I speak its langue I
Run behind it and then
It runs behind me and I
Keep it safe in my hand
Sleep until the morning
With my back against the wall

Wütend genug

Bin ich nicht wütend genug für dich
Und deine Leute?
Ich muss nicht heulen
Ich kenne den Mond
Nicht erst seit heute

Bin ich nicht wütend genug für dich
Und deine Leute?
Ich muss nicht jagen
Das Jagen lasse ich dir
Und deiner Meute

Macht dich das wütend genug
Macht dich das wütend

Genug für mein Ziel
Für meine Liebe, für mein Spiel
Genug für mein Ziel
Nur für dich
Bleibt mir nicht viel

Bin ich nicht wütend genug für dich
Und deine Leute?
Ich muss nicht beißen
Zwischen meinen Zähnen
trage ich
Die zappelnde Beute
Macht dich das wütend genug
Macht dich das wütend

Angry enough

Am I not angry enough for you
And your folks?
I don’t have to howl
I know the moon
Not just since today

Am I not angry enough for you
And your folks?
I don’t have to hunt
I leave the hunting to you
And your pack

Does this make you angry enough
Does this make you angry

Enough for my aim
For my love, for my game
Enough for my aim
Only for you
I don’t have much left

Am I not angry enough for you
And your folks?
I don’t have to bite
Between my teeth
I carry
The floundering prey / haul

Comment by Caro / Geht auseinander: User icon

Geht auseinander

Nur ein Schritt zurück
Nur einer
Siehst du
Es geht
Geht auseinander

Soll das die heiße Liebe sein,
die euch verbrennt
zwei Hände auf dem heißen Herd,
bis einer flennt
– geht auseinander.

Wieder Kaffee trinkend,
Kuchen werfend
Traumreisen zu buchen
Wieder reißt ihr euch zusammen
Wieder reißt ihr euch zusammen
Wieder reißt ihr euch zusammen
Alle Haare einzeln raus
Geht auseinander

Nur ein Schritt zurück
Nur einer

Du sagst dein blaues Auge
mache dich so sentimental

Break up/Seperate

[in German it means to break up as a couple as well as to put some space between two people]

Only one step back
Only one
You see
It’s possible
Break up/Seperate

Is this supposed to be hot love
That burns you
[in German it’s clear that refers to several people]
Two hand on the hot cooker
Until one is snivelling
- break up/seperate

But you are attached to each other
You fasten yourself onto each other
Want to change you
Hang each other, hang the
Other one – break up

Time not to be twosome

Just one step back
Just one
You see
It’s possible

But it was love at
First sight, you say
Already the second glance wasn’t
That nice
You say
But where there’s a will, there’s always also
a trick

[And that’s why you beat each other
Every morning until your eyes are billowed] [had to change it a bit]
- break up/Separate
But you think about each other

You push to change [the two of you]
You impose yourself, you crowd the other one
- break up/Separate

Time not to be twosome

Just one step back
Just one

Dou you want to damn each other
Just to search each other again
Again while drinking coffee
Throwing cake
Booking dreams of a lifetime / dream holidays
Again you straighten up
Again you straighten up
Again you straighten up
You tear out all of you hair

[wordplay because of line skip in German: “Wieder reißt ihr euch zusammen” = again you straighten up, but “wieder reißt ihr euch zusammen alle Haare einzeln raus” = again you tear out all of you hair together]

Just one step back
Only one

You say that your blue eye

[double/triple connotation because 1. blue eye (=color of the eye), 2. = beaten up, 3. allusion to a song from the German NDW-band Ideal from the 80ies: “Deine blauen Augen machen mich so sentimental” = Your blue eyes sentimentalize me so much”]

Sentimentalizes you
Hard to believe: What both of you feel
Isn’t normal any more

[there are thousands of wordplays/double connotations here!]

Comment by Caro / Zieh dir was an: User icon

Zieh dir was an

perfekt in jedes Marketingkalkül

Zieh dir was an - Mädchen
Wer etwas kann - Mädchen
Zieht dann und wann - Mädchen
Ein Bisschen was an

Zieh dir was an - Mädchen

Was glaubst du, was das bringt, außer dreckigen Zoten

Put on something/Get dressed

You’ve set out / you put you clothes off to teach us fear
[both meanings at the same time in German]
To finally enlighten us the with details of the female body/nature
[Why do you have to go naked]

[direct: why do you have to spring like the springer created you, allusion to the tabloid papers with naked girls on the front, because a big company is called “Springer Verlag”]

Girl, didn’t you once have another job

If you detect your ass at the age of 20
And “stretch” [show] it into every camera henceforth
Then your great new self assurance fits in
Perfectly to every marketing strategy

Put on something – Girl
The one who is able to do s.th./knows how to do s.th. – Girl
From time to time – Girl
Puts on “a bit of” something

Somebody always believes that this is erotic
But your sex is totally conventional/narrow-minded, man, totally idiotic

[allusion to German “singer” Jeanette Biedermann (dein Sex ist total bieder, mann, …)]

To think to free the rest of the free world
You’d have to scream for a riding crop naked

You shake the money maker
But you’re not Josephine Baker
One can see that your parents are Quakers
It has no format, your flirting

[doesn’t really fit, the verb “schäkern” is a very old a bit negative word, maybe to philander?]

Put on something – Girl

What do you think this will lead for except dirty jokes
Except the marginally better [proportion of viewers]
Except the few offers for marketing jobs
And a success that stinks like a dog’s paws

What are you applying for, you’re not corrupted / ruined [both in German but active] by waiting
You’re not dying of disregard
Oh, and I think that your boss is a tot and you’re not

Comment by Caro / Gekommen um zu bleiben: User icon

Gekommen um zu bleiben

Ihr sagt: The höher they come,
the blöder they fall
Ihr sagt „Was so abgeht must doch bitte come down“
Ich sag den Untergang ab
ohne runter zu schauen

Wir gehen nicht, aber wenn wir gehen,
dann gehen wir in Scheiben
Entschuldigung, aber ich sagte:
wir sind gekommen um zu bleiben.

Gekommen um zu bleiben
Wir gehen nicht mehr weg
Gekommen um zu bleiben
Wie ein perfekter Fleck
Gekommen um zu bleiben
Wir gehen nicht mehr weg
Ist dieser Fleck erst in der Hose
ist er nicht mehr raus zu reiben
Entschuldigung, ich glaub
Wir sind gekommen
um zu bleiben

Und ihr singt Dankeschön und auf Wiedersehen
Reicht uns wehende Fahnen, damit unterzugehen
Lebet hoch!

Dann sagt ihr: Schau, the end is near, now bitte face your final curtain

Come to stay

You say: the higher they get,
The more stupid they fall
So damn risen above
And still standing tall
You say: “What grooves [new German word – can’t really translate it!] so much
Has to come down please”
I cancel the downfall
Without looking down

We don’t we leave but if we leave
We leave in slices
Sorry but I said
We’ve come to stay

Come to stay
We don’t leave anymore
Come to stay
Like a perfect stain
Come to stay
Like a perfect stain
This stain is already on the pants
You cannot rub it out
Sorry I think
we’ve come to stay

And you sing thank you and good-bye
Hand out some waving flags to decline with them
Pride will have a fall
If there’s speed
Humans wish for the bang
You handcuff us on the horse and tell us to urge it on
Sorry I said:

We’ve come to stay
Come to stay
We don’t leave anymore

Then you say: “Look! The end is near now, please face you final curtain.”
But we’re clever, we’re staying here
For the faces the disgusted

These ghosts are singing off-key and are not easily not be dispossessed
Sorry I said:
We’ve come to stay
We don’t leave but when we leave
We leave in slices
Sorry I said:
We’ve come to stay

Nur ein Wort

Ich sehe, dass du denkst
Ich denke dass du fühlst
Ich fühle dass du willst
aber ich hör dich nicht ich

hab mir ein Wörterbuch geliehen
dir A bis Z ins Ohr geschrieen

Ich will in deine tiefen Wasser
Große Wellen schlagen

Oh bitte gib mir nur ein Wort

In meinem Blut werfen
die Endorphine Blasen
Wenn hinter deinen stillen
Hasenaugen die Gedanken rasen

Just one word

I see that you think
I think that you feel
I feel that you want
But I don’t hear you, I

Have borrowed a dictionnary
Have shouted A to Z into your ear
I’m piling up a thousand mazy words
That [pick] your sleeve

And where you want to go
I’m cludging to your legs

[direct translation: “If you have to be fallen on your mouth why not on mine”, doesn’t make sense in English but I really can’t translate it because it is a proverb and it also isn’t logical in German! Figuratively it means s.th. like: If you never talk why not talk to me or maybe even kiss me??? No idea]

Oh please give me just an Oh
Please give me just an Oh
Please give me just an Oh
Please give me just a
Please give me just one word

It is crazy how you remain silent
How you bend your good-looking head
And this way give the whole loud world and me
The cold shoulder

Your silence is your tent
You put it in the middle of the world
Tighten the laces and marvel
Dumb when
A girl stumbles over them at night

At your feet I’m talking [myself into trouble/risking my neck]
I want to produce big waves
In your deep water

[proverb: “Stille Wasser sind tief” = Still water runs deep, means that silent/inconspicous people have a lot to say/offer more than you’d thought, so if she wants to produce waves in his waters it means they’re not silent any more so he will either talk or it turns out that he really has got nothing to say! Oooh that was hard…]

Oh please give me just an Oh

In my blood the endorphines
Are forming bubbles
When behind your silent
Eyes of a hare the thoughts are racing

Comment by Caro / Ich werde mein Leben lang üben: User icon

Zwei Finger an deinem Handgelenk
Ist jeder Herzschlag mein
Zerbrechliches Geschenk

Ich bleibe nicht ruhig aber
Ich kann es lernen
Dann lass ich dich gehen
Irgendwann
Ohne mich zu entfernen

Ich werde mein Leben lang üben
Ich will dass du verstehst
Ich werde mein Leben lang üben
Dich so zu lieben
Wie ich dich lieben will
Wenn du gehst

So lang werde ich bei dir sein
Zwei Finger an deinem Handgelenk
Fang ich all deine Stunden auf
Und steck sie für dich ein

Ich bleibe nicht ruhig aber
ich kann es lernen
dann lass ich dich gehen,
das letzte Stück
zu den Sternen

I will practise my whole life to love you like I want to love you when you leave

I don’t fall asleep
Two fingers on your wrist
Is every hearbeat my
Fragile gift

I’m not staying calm but
I can learn it
Then I let you go
Sometime
Whithout (re)moving (myself)

I will practise my whole life
I want you to understand
I will practise my whole life
To love you like
I want to love you
When you leave

As long as that I will be with you
Two fingers on your wrist
I’m catching all of your hours
And pocket them for you

I’m not staying calm but
I can learn it
Then I let you go
The last bit
To the stars

Comment by Caro / Bist du nicht müde: User icon

Allein dein Gewehr muss doch zehn Tonnen wiegen

Aren’t you tired

Aren’t you tired after so many
Hours
You’re wavering and tumbling your feet

(You)

[In German it is clear that it is the “you” without saying it]

Turn in a circle until the day
is fading
And (you) hope in the end that the night
Will still take you

I’m finding you on the ground the back
To the wall
The eyes to the door two stones in
Every hand

Give it to me I can hold it
Give it to me I can hold it
If you still want it later
You get it back
Then everything is as it was before

Aren’t you tired after so many
Days
(You’re) Still fighting in the dark
With the shadows
(You’re) Spilling out hot blood you’re blustering in
Pain
(You) turn in a circle until the walls
Blacken themselves
I’m finding you on the ground your fingers
Burnt
The hot coals still in
Your hand

Give it to me I can hold it

Aren’t you tired after so many
Years
(You) don’t know your questions anymore
(You) can’t get together a clear
sentence, (you)’re talking mazy stuff
(You)’re suffocating because of the words
(You) maroon your dreams at disconsolate
places

And I find you on the ground, you let fly
Clay pidgeons
Your gun alone must weigh ten
tons

Comment by Caro / Alphamännchen: User icon

(From the EP that you can’t get anymore):

Alpha dog

[in German it’s a diminutive, normally you say “Alphatier”, maybe you could translate it „alpha male“]

Your glances scoff from sleepy lids
All the does shyly cast down their brown doe eyes
And you creep along on furry paws
This smirk of a carnivore should be forbidden
Why do you carry this little bit of an ass so confidently through the world
How can you be so sure that this appeals to me

Alpha dog
Alpha dog
Alpha dog I know that your pride/pack waits for you
But alpha dog sit up and beg for me only once

I know for sure that you know for sure
What effect you achieve
If you play lost and dreamily with my shoelaces
Though yet you don’t care for does for most of the year
Until the pairing season they dry up in your shelf
They wait for hours in front of the door to your apartment and whimper
They are waiting very long just to flatter you

[wordplay in German: expression: sich die Beine in den Bauch stehen = waiting for a long time, jemandem den Bauch pinseln = to toady s.o., to make compliments to s.o.]

You bite in every hand that dishevels your hair
You are so neat when you furiously scrunch your leash
Alpha dog
Alpha dog
Alpha dog I know that your pride/pack waits for you
But alpha dog sit up and beg for me only once Alpha dog
Alpha dog
Alpha dog I know that your pride/pack waits for you
But alpha dog sit up and beg for me only once

Comment by Caro / Keine Angst mehr: User icon

Keine Angst mehr

(Bonustrack on the single„Gekommen um zu bleiben“)

Kein schmaler Grad mehr
kein Unten kein Oben
du hättest während du schliefst
alle Wolken verschoben und
all deine Fragen sagten
sie bräuchten dich nicht mehr
und du könntest gehen

Stell dir vor,
du hättest keine Angst mehr
vor nichts und vor niemand
nie wieder
Allein

Der Wind heulte nachts nicht mehr
vor deinem Fenster
Im Muster der Wand wohnten keine Gespenster
mehr, die dunklen Gestalten
wärmten die kalten
Hände jetzt woanders als an dir

Du hättest keine Angst mehr
vor nichts und vor niemand
nie wieder
Allein

Du könntest jeden so lieben
wie diesen einen
Du könntest alles verlieren
müsstest um niemanden weinen
und all deine Liebe
bliebe für immer
egal, wohin die Leute gehen

Stell dir vor,
du hättest keine Angst mehr
vor nichts und vor niemand
nie wieder
Allein

Du hättest keine Angst mehr
vor nichts und vor niemand
nie wieder
Allein

No fear anymore

No narrow ridge anymore
No below and no above
You (said you have) while you were sleeping
Pushed the clouds away and
All your questions say
They don’t need you anymore
(They said that) You could leave

Imagine
You would have no fear anymore
Of anything or anyone
Never ever
Alone

The wind didn’t howl at night anymore
In front of your window
In the pattern of the wall there lived
No ghosts anymore
The dark creatures warmed their cold
Hands somewhere else than at you[r body]

You would have no fear anymore
Of anything or anyone
Never ever
Alone

You could love anyone
Just like this one [in German it’s clear it’s a male]
You could lose everything
Would not have to weep for anyone
And all of your love
Would stay forever
No matter where people are going to

Imagine…

Comment by Caro / Halt dich an deiner Liebe fest: User icon

Halt dich an deiner Liebe fest

(Bonustrack on the latest single „Nur ein Wort“)

Wenn niemand bei dir ist
Und du denkst, dass keiner dich sucht
Du hast die Reise ins Jenseits
Vielleicht schon gebucht
Und all die Lügen
Geben dir den Rest

Halt dich an deiner Liebe fest
Halt dich an deiner Liebe fest

Halt dich an deiner Liebe fest
Halt dich an deiner Liebe fest

Wenn der Novemberwind
Deine Hoffnung verweht
Du bist so müde, so müde
Und du weißt nicht, wie’s weitergeht
Wenn dein kaltes Bett
Dich nicht schlafen lässt

Halt dich an deiner Liebe fest
Halt dich fest
An deiner Liebe

Hold to your love

If no one is with you
And you think that no one searches for you
And you have maybe already booked
the journey to the next world
And all the lies
put you over the edge

Hold to your love
Hold to your love

If spring arrives
And your soul burns
You wake up at night from your dreams
And there is no one who sleeps at yours
And the one whom you are waiting for
Abandons you

Hold to your love
Hold to your love

If the wind of November
blows over your hope
You are so tired, so tired
And you don’t know how it will go on
If your cold bed
doesn’t let you sleep

Hold to your love

Hold tight

Nice page. :) Just wanted to tell ya, that there is an “official” version of “von hier an blind” in English. You probably already know, but it may help you with your translations. :)

You can have a look at it here (e.g.): http://www.mtv.de/wirsindhelden/

Nice greetings from Germany, chrissi

Just found your page by google, I wanted to find romanji lyrics to the japanese version of “Von hier an blind”. I had a quick look over a few of the translations, expecially over “Von hier an blind” and I noted a few things don’t seem to be that well translated: Wagen - can mean cart, but in this case the better term would just be “car”. (In the video you can even see the heroes driving in a car) Why use the medical term “gastric”? I think stomach fits better. “The car(t) fell on it’s knees. It said…” The “It” refers to the car. I personally think that the german version refers to a male person, in that case the “It” should be changed to “he”, but I may be wrong here. “and not even 1000m” - Isn’t there some term like “and just 1000m” to describe the distance? The given trnaslation is too direct. “The break gave me new ideas above my station” - How did this translation happen? As far as I know, the term “to put a bug in one’s ear” exists in english, so why don’t translate the line with “the break put (a) new bug(s) in my ear” or somthing similar?

Well, these a just a few notes for that particular song, I will now continue my search for a romanji text of the japanese version. :)

Popstar

Ich will mich da oben sehn

Popstar eins lässt mich noch nicht schlafen
Eins lässt mir keine Ruh
Popstar will ich dich lieber ficken
Oder wär ich lieber du
Popstar will ich richtig gut träumen

(Popstar Popstar)
Pop-Popstar
(Popstar Popstar)
Pop-Popstar (Popstar)
Pop-Popstar (Popstar)
Pop-Popstar (Popstar)
Pop-Popstar (Popstar)

Popstar eins lässt mich noch nicht schlafen…

Pop star

As long as I can remember I’ve admired pop stars
But it appears to me that I’m admiring in the wrong way
I think the other girls are admiring in some other way
I don’t know what it is

The hall is quietening down the lights go off
And I know that it’ll soon be time and you’ll come out
And a spot goes on and I start to sweat
Like the others the others I’m staring at you

And my heart is pounding and it gives me a sting
But I don’t know is it pounding and stinging only for you
Am I maybe totally cuckoo [wordplay in German: bekloppt = cuckoo, beklopft = allusion to “klopfen”, ]
Maybe I’m mad [wordplay in German, translation maybe: I’m out of my sting]

Because I want you, I want I
I want to see myself up there

Pop star one thing keeps me awake
One thing keeps on troubling me
Pop star do I want to fuck you
Or do I prefer to be you
Pop star if I want to have real good dreams
I close you eyes

Like others throw teddies I’m throwing
My dream at your head and you’re throwing back my picture
Thereupon I wear your trousers, practise your pose
Order a hundred items

It seems to be clear to everyone that I can’t be you
We’re different [although] the difference is small
If the manager is fussy I can’t possibly enter a single boy band

If I don’t mutate into a man tomorrow
I should try the former
Or will the shine drop out of the running entirely then
Or stay on your forehead

Pop star one thing keeps me awake…

(Pop star Pop star)
Pop-Pop star
(Pop star Po pstar)
Pop-Pop star (Pop star)
Pop-Pop star (Pop star)
Pop-Pop star (Pop star)
Pop-Pop star (Pop star)

Pop star one thing keeps me awake…

I’m happy for you

I’m happy for you
You’re finally twosome
One who’s twosome
Has got only half of the time for a third one

I’m sorry
No, you don’t have to dab my nose
Now you think I’m sad
But I just have a cold

I’m happy for you
That you finally have someone
With whom you miss out our appointments twosome
You hardly ever go out (clubbing) now
And why should you swigg
You have a date with him to buy furniture

It’s late and what is more
You [plural] are making yourself comfortable just now
I can perfectly understand that
But I can’t stand the sight of him anymore
I’m happy for you
I’m so happy for you
But for me
I’m not happy

I’m happy that you finally have someone
Who fits into your handbag unfolded
And who nearly always wheels your shopping unasked
I’m happy for you
You finally fell in love

It’s late and what is more…

And I know that you need him
That you stopped smoking after you’ve met him
That you’re now diving where you were skin-diving in the past
But sometimes I need you too
I need you

I’m happy for you

Comment by Caro / Meine beste Freundin: User icon

Meine beste Freundin

Meine beste Freundin will immer nur mein Bestes.

My best [female/gay/girl] friend [the clue of the song actually is that Judith uses the German word “Freundin”, standing for a girlfriend, meaning a gay guy in this case, who should be referred to as a “Freund”]

My best friend is so good-looking
If we go out on the street together
Everyone just stares at these legs
And I feel null
Just as important as the dachshund on the lead

My best friend is refreshingly / brutally honest
Even if his truth is ruining my day
Just like recently when he said: “This robe suits you wonderfully!
I think it’s great if a woman with hips like yours dares that.”

“You’re my best friend”, I said.
He said: “Thanks, I’ve practised a lot.
I’ve copied that from Beverly Hills and added some pathos.”
That’s enough! I don’t want to be Gay-Mummy anymore!
Anyway all of your skirts are way to small for me
Listen to me and see it
From today you’ll put on your make-up alone

My best friend is so good-looking
It’s not nice to go out (clubbing) with him
All these boys in the tight pants
Do they want me or you or do we have to draw lots

My best friend always wants my own good
He wants to see every crush as the first
It’s just in my own interest
If he tests the guys before
Whether they don’t prefer boys
If it comes to the crunch

Kompass

gespannt ob die See zu mir her sah

Mein Kompass, mein Anker, mein Ufer
Mein Lotse, mein Leinen-los-Rufer

Mein Kompass, mein Anker
Mein Ufer, mein Lotse
Mein Land-in-sich-Rufer

Mein Kompass, mein Anker
Mein Ufer, mein Lotse
Mein Land-in-sich-Rufer

Compass

Tonight I was suddenly walking on my own
Where once 4 have been were only 2 legs

Nevertheless I walked and was standing at the water in the sand
Anxious whether the sea looked over to me

And I saw that the beach was just the end of the land
but not the beginning of the sea

My compass, my anchor, my shore
My pilot, my Cast-off-Caller

Where am I when here is no longer here
Where am I when you are not in me anymore

Now the silence is clearing its throat sensibly
Your mark at the wall where the door was
Is making my room so small you don’t cross my mind anymore

I’m frisking myself but I can’t find myself
I’m tying your shadow on my leg in pretence
To flay a closed season for hours

My compass, my anchor, my shore
My pilot, my Land-in-itself-Caller

Where am I when here is no longer here
Where am I when you are not in me anymore

I’m calling for you in half-empty rooms
Am ripping drawers out of my dreams

I’m ransacking the night feeling everyone who’s laughing
And trying to steal me a smile

Haven’t turned on a light in the night who’s awaking
Out of fear that you couldn’t lack

My compass, my anchor, my shore
My pilot, my Land-in-itself-Caller

Where am I when here is no longer here
Where am I when you are not in me anymore

Very nice, very helpful. I’m an American WSH fan, and American English does have its, shall we say, disparities. I think I could make some improvements to these translations to make them some better in English, but at that point I’d be taking too much creative license. In general, these translations nicely capture the ideas of the songs, although with some odd translations of the individual words. I have the same problem trying to translate songs into German: they come out in stunted Hochdeutsch.

Thanks for your effort!

Thanks for your feedback, Haf and Dwayne. (Finally someone did it! Wow) I know the translations are anything but perfect, I tried my best and as I did it mostly for fun, I’m still pleased with myself. ;-) I’ll look at them again as soon as I have got enough time to do it, so thanks for your corrections! If anyone else has got something to add, feel free to do it! :-)

Hello. Question about Von hier an Blind translation: How does “ich weiss nicht weiter” turn into “I’m at a loss”? I would think “ich weiss nicht weiter” would mean “I don’t know anything more/further”. “War ich noch nie” doesn’t seem to make much sense either.

January 20, 2006, 18:57

Comment by ssp: User icon

Tom, look at the note Caro made where the text first occurs.

‘war ich noch nie’ doesn’t make too much sense on its own. But you could read it in context as ‘Ich weiß nicht, weiter war ich noch nie’, i.e. ‘I don’t know, I’ve never been further’. On the other hand ‘Ich weiß nicht weiter’ is also supposed to stand on its own as ‘I don’t know what to do next’.

hello there! I have a few comments on the translation of “von hier an blind”. I´m a German guy and maybe that might help. i´m aware of the fact that Judith´s lyrics sometimes are very complicated. believe me: there are even Germans that don´t understand them mainly because Judith uses commonly known proverbs and changes them.

Between two questions In the gap between two days there was nothing left to say No complaints to lament and I Took the car And fell on my knees before HIM(! it clearly refers to a male person)

I said:

I don´t know how to go on [further] I have never been [further] [play of word because of line skip in German: “Ich weiß nicht weiter” = I’m at a loss, but “weiter war ich noch nie” = I’ve never been further!]

Me and the car and the swarm of bees in the stomach Und der Bienenschwarm im Magen [that´s a hard one: the original proverb says: “to have butterflies in the belly” it means to be in love, to have that nice warm feeling combined with nervous feelings. bees sometimes sting. i think that judith turns the meaning of the butterfly-proverb with positive connotations into a rather negatively connotated meaning which refers to feelings such as anxiety, being stuck etc…)

And the road that was had to be hit [perhaps better: that I had to go]

We got along but Two days ago The car broke down

that´s it so far. the song is about breaking up with her boyfriend and the feelings she has while she is on the way to him to tell him it´s over! by the way: “Flausen” are silly ideas…

hello! maybe I can clear things up a little more:

There´s a proverb in German which says “das älteste Gewerbe der Welt” [the oldest trade of the world]. I do not know if there´s a similar expression in english… but it means prostitution.

“das kälteste Gewerbe der Welt” [the coldest trade of the world] refers to the music industry.

by the way: i´m very glad to see that the Helden (one of my favourite bands) have fans in foreign countries!

If there are any problems you can can send an email. since i´m a native speaker maybe I could help sometimes.

No idea]

a direct translation would be

if you have to fall on the (a) mouth then why not on mine

while “not being fallen on their mouth” is something germans say about people that allways say something and in this case thats negated which probably makes it very hard to follow for non native german speakers .. yet its a beautiful and whitty use of the german language

And while I’m here, could you recommend any other artists like WSH? For example, I also like Die Prinzen and Kraftwerk, but not 2Raumwohnung or Die Ärzte.

Nick, the world of German music is tricky. And you can go in many directions from Wir Sind Helden. If you are in for the lyrics, you may enjoy Element of Crime or some old Tocotronic stuff – or Die Sterne, while I’m at it. If you’re in for more modern stuff, try The Robocop Kraus (loud) or Stereo Total (weird). In the young kiddie genre you could try Madsen or Hund am Strand. Or go for bands like Sportfreunde Stiller or Virginia Jetzt! if you prefer more poppy music.

Hm, I could’ve just linked to my German music category, I guess.

I believe the verb you search for “pegeln” in Helden’s “Ist Das So” is “gauge.” The lines would be: Go on damning the wind in your sluggish sails As far as I know you can’t even gauge the rain.

You’ve done such a great job translating these tough texts, thought it a shame you missed one lousy word.

“wenn du auf den Mund fallen muesst Warum dann nicht auf meinen”

If your words don’t fall from your mouth Then why not fall onto to mine

Literally:

If you are quiet Why not on mine

I think this may be a better translation

Hey caro,

“halt an deiner liebe fest” is not a original wsh-song! the original is from the great RIO REISER, former leader of the band “ton, steine, scherben” and also known as a single artist. maybe “Koenig von deutschland” rings a bell. “stone, steine, scherben” was a very left-wing band. he died a few years ago and to his memory several german artist made a tribute cd, wsh chose “halt an deiner liebe fest”. nice translation so far, thank you!

Hi, I recently found the lyrics to several songs from Judith Holoferne’s ‘Kamikazefliege’ album that aren’t on here (Hirnwichserei, Afroamerikanerküsse, and Kamikazefliege) and would be willing to translate them. How would I go about posting the translations when I finish them? Danke schön.

That’s great Adam! Feel free to add the lyrics and your translations here. I’m sure it will be appreciated. Follow the Markdown link below the comment form to see how you can format text properly (line breaks, italics…). And if things go wrong I can still try to fix them later on.

Kamikazefliege

Kamikaze Fly

Come, we’re burning our fingers and bashing our heads
Running blindly into walls, and right into the trap
We would rather bleed together than stand completely alone
Who wouldn’t rather get ruined out of love than not at all

Kamikaze fly, I would like to be you
For Kamikaze flies, the sky is still too small
And I know, you’re not leaving me alone
That’s why you should be my Kamikaze copilot

I would like to blow up my bridges
Hang on silk strings with you
Singe my eyebrows by you
We’ll have all the ropes pull together, don’t let your conscious bite you
If the spirit of love irritates you, fetch them from me for you

We said we were going to risk losing each other in the fire
Rather than never take our chances, and then still lose each other without a reason
I suppose I will give my compass away, send my rescue boat to the bottom
Rather than just think about it, I will love you until I am sore

Kamikaze fly, I would like to be you
For Kamikaze flies, the sky is still too small
And I know, you’re not leaving me alone
That’s why you should be my Kamikaze copilot

I’d rather have one foot in crap and the other in emptiness
Than cut across the ground of this place with my eyes again and again

I’m not saying don’t worry, I have a rope, nothing at all can happen to us
I’m just saying, take my hand, I feel weak and I will try nevertheless
The thin air is becoming so incredibly hot under our clothes whenever one falls
And who knows that the parachute may still not hold this time as well

Kamikaze fly, I would like to be you
For Kamikaze flies, the sky is still too small
And I know, you’re not leaving me alone
That’s why you should be my Kamikaze copilot

Ich will alles

Ich will alles sehn
Ich will überall hingehn
Ich will alles verdrehn

Ich will alles
Ich will alles
Ich will alles

Nie in meinem Leben Damon Alban küssen

Ich will alles sehn
Ich will überall hingehn
Ich will alles verdrehn

Ich will alles
Ich will alles
Ich will alles

Ich will alles sehn
Ich will überall hingehn
Ich will alles verdrehn

Ich will alles
Ich will alles
Ich will alles

Ich will alles sehn
Ich will überall hingehn
Ich will alles verdrehn

Ich will alles
Ich will alles
Ich will alles
Und zwar sofort

I want everything

The other day someone took me to the side and said that I’m worried
I believe you have no morals or are just very blind
Furthermore, he still told me I was more than immodest
And I must suffer from megalomania

And I said, hmm, I believe, there must be some truth to that

I want to have everything
I want to see everything
I want to go everywhere
I want to twist/pervert everything

I want everything
I want everything
I want everything
And I want it now

Very early, I seized the plan that I liked this very day
It goes like this: I become a popstar, then rescue the world
After that have twenty-five children and a hero as a husband
And if nothing else occurs to me, I’ll be elected as chancellor

That I can’t have everything is a fact that I don’t find nice to know
For example, I will probably never pee while standing up, after all
I will never in my life kiss Damon Alban
And tonight probably only my pillows will love me again

I want to have everything
I want to see everything
I want to go everywhere
I want to twist/pervert everything

I want everything
I want everything
I want everything
And I want it now

I want the love of my life and at the same time something less serious
I would like a man who does the dirty work and two for the finer things
The fourth brings me flowers, number five the money
Is my world getting to small? Then I’ll gladly take yours too

That I can’t have everything is something that I’m not going to understand
Because when I’m choosing, my eyes are going to ignore
What is the point if handsome men don’t turn my head
If they still go home with other women in the end

I want everything
I want to see everything
I want to go everywhere
I want to twist/pervert everything

I want everything
I want everything
I want everything
And I want it now

I would like daylight at nighttime the most
And why don’t the stars shine during the day, anyway?
I’m going to the well with my pitcher until the well breaks
Because the fairy of luck will work an extra shift to make me smile

I want everything
I want to see everything
I want to go everywhere
I want to twist/pervert everything

I want everything
I want everything
I want everything
And I want it now

Hi, I just thought that I should let you know that the lyrics to Aurelie in Kamikazefliege are a little different to those in Die Reklamation. I’ve just translated the lyrics that are different and I’ll post the full lyrics to the Kamikazefliege version. But the Kamikazefliege version of Außer Dir is exactly the same as the one in Die Reklamation, and Popstar is also the same. Plus, I thought I should mention that I’ve recently found the lyrics for “Ich muss früh raus” and “Friede, Freude, Lagerfeuer” off a fan site, so I’ll be able to translate them too. By the way, the new menu for Kamikazefliege looks great.

All right, Adam. Thanks for your translations so far. I’ll try keep the links updated as things move on. If I’m not mistaken, this leaves Hirnwichserei and Afroamerikanerküsse missing… I’ll see what I can do about those.

I have to admit I just nicked the cover art from last.fm.

Comment by Adam / Aurélie: User icon

Aurélie’s accent is very charming without question
Even when she keeps still she is noticed as being wonderful
She does not have to be sparing with her attraction
Because her hair is sea and wheat
Even bald everyone will adore her

But Aurélie never gets it
Every evening she asks me
When will someone fall in love with her

Aurélie, I think you have a problem there
If you’d just stick your hand out, it would be quite easy
Love-struck boys would stand and also queue
Aurelie anxiously clears her throat
Her question isn’t very pleasant to her

Ah, why don’t German men like me
If I talk with them, none look me in the face
If I go to a disco, one of them would never ask me out somewhere
And they all pretent it’s their duty to be silent with you all

Aurélie that way it will never work
You are expecting much to much
The Germans flirt very subtle

Aurélie the men like you a lot here
On the street everyone looks at you
But you don’t notice anything because they don’t whistle
And if you do they flee
You have to know less is more here

Oh, Aurélie in Germany love needs time
Here you are ready for the first steps after days
For the next weeks you talk
You size each other up the most thoroughly
And after that you meet anywhere twosome

Aurélie that way it will never work
You are expecting much to much
The Germans flirt very subtle

Aurélie it’s just not that simple
Here different words are of different importance
All the boys lying at your feet
Want to kiss these also the cute ones
But you don’t notice it
Because he’s talking about soccer at the same time

Oh, Aurélie you say I shall explain it to you
How on earth Germans are reproducing
If all the flowers and the bees do nothing but smirking in Berlin
And don’t give a damn about questions of pollination

Aurélie that way it will never work
You are expecting much to much
The Germans flirt very subtle

Hi, I actually have the lyrics for Hirnwichserei and Afroamerikanerküsse. I think I mentioned something about them in my first post. I have Afroamerikanerküsse about half translated, but Hirnwichserei I’m having some trouble with. There are some words in it that I can’t find in the dictionary, and the lyrics seem a little explicit, so if I came across sentence that I had trouble with, I wouldn’t feel so comfortable asking for help on the German-learning forums I’ve been using. So, I’ve kind of been putting that one off, but I’ll try to get Afroamerikanerküsse done soon.

hello, I don’t know if this is still a live blog, but anyway..

I like to sing-along-a-helden so I’ve translated a few of my favorite songs into english, but in a free transalation sense so they scan in english but keep the original poetry - so some words get changed a bit and some tenses get modified but they are at the end singable lyrics not direct transaltions.

The point for me is not to do an accademic translation but to keep rhythm and poetry

here is Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder - what do you think?

Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder/they say time heals all wonders
Wenn du sie gut verschnürst/when you tie them up tight
Bind nur die Stelle gut ab/when you just tie off the place
bis du es gar nicht mehr spürst/until there is no feeling left
Du weißt ein Feuer geht aus /you know the fire will die
wenn du es länger nicht schürst/if you just leave it alone
und du weißt dass du besser/and you know that you’d not better
an alte Wunder nicht rührst/not rake-over coals
Und auch das größte Wunder geht vorbei/and even the great wonders pass in time
Und wenn es dich nicht loslässt zähl bis drei/and if they do not pass just count to three
Und es geht vorbei es geht vorbei/and in time they will pass
Du kommst auf die Welt um ihr den Kopf zu verdrehen/you came to earth you came to change the world and
Du lachst über Hunde und deine eigenen Zehen/you laughed at the dogs and then you laughed at your toes
Du bleibst kaum kannst du laufen alle zwei Meter stehen/you stopped every few feet when learning to walk
und fällst auf die Knie um noch ein Wunder zu sehn/then you fell to your knees to see another wonder

Und am nächsten Wunder ziehen sie dich vorbei/at the next wonder they move you on
Der der dich am Arm hält zählt bis drei/the one who holds your hand just counts to three
Und es geht vorbei es geht vorbei/and in time it passes by
Es geht vorbei es geht vorbei/and in time it passes by
Es geht vorbei es geht vorbei/and in time it passes by

Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder/time heals all wonders
schon nach wenigen Jahren/and after too few years
Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder/time healed all wonders
schon nach wenigen Jahren/and after too few years
Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder/time healed all wonders
schon nach wenigen Jahren/and after too few years
nur noch Narben da wo Wunder waren/there are only scars where there once were wonders

Wann wirst du endlich lernen/and when you finaly learn
dir nicht den Kopf zu verdrehen/not to look all around you
Du fällst über Hunde und deine eigenen Zehen/you fall over the dogs and you fall over your own toes
Du kannst kaum grade laufen bleibst alle zwei Meter stehen/you can no longer walk and you fall every few feet
und fällst auf die Knie damit die Wunder dich sehen/and you drop to your knees so the wonders see you

Und das zehnte Wunder zieht an dir vorbei/and as the 10th wonder passes you by
Du betest dass es stehen bleibt zählst bis drei/you pray that it stops by count to three
Und es geht vorbei es geht vorbei/and in time it passes by
Es geht vorbei es geht vorbei/and in time it passes by
Es geht vorbei es geht vorbei/and in time it passes by

Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder/time heals all wonders
schon nach wenigen Jahren/and after too few years
Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder/time healed all wonders
schon nach wenigen Jahren/and after too few years
Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder/time healed all wonders
schon nach wenigen Jahren/and after too few years
nur noch Narben da wo Wunder waren/there are only scars where there once were wonders

Die Zeit heilt und alle wundern /so time healed and all wonder
sich nach all den Jahren/after all these long years
Dass nichts bleibt als ein paar Stunden /that nothings left but hours
da wo Wunder waren/where once there were wonders
Die Zeit heilt und alle wundern /so time healed and all wonder
sich nach all den Jahren/after all these long years
Dass nichts bleibt als ein paar Stunden /that nothings left but hours
da wo Wunder waren/where once there were wonders

Die Zeit heilt alle Wunder/time heals all wonders

Tausend Dank =)

Oh my god, know I have to write in English … My Englishteacher hates me, so I didn’t had a chance to learn English and be good (?) in this subject ^^ I want to have a look at “Nur ein Wort” again, on the misterious words “Wenn du schon auf den Mund fallen musst, warum dann nicht auf meinen?” It’s not easy to tranlate, but these words are so sweet …^^ Maybe this could be a translation (it’s not a word-by-word translation, I only want to try to show the “statement” of this sentence): “You really want to fell on your mouth? Why you don’t use my one?”

I got introduced to Wir Sind Helden by a German friend earlier this year. Ive been checking them out on youtube.com recently. Even though I dont have a clue what the lyrics mean, as my German is zero, there songs are really cool.

And, the video for Guten Tag, brilliant, its so funny, funny funny funny.the expressions, movement, hand gesters, its fantastic. I love the comic book look for the video.

Anyway, any sign of Wir Sind Helden coming to Dublin???? Probably not, as no one knows them here in Ireland. However, i am spreading the word, slowly but surely.

Peace out.

hello - The translation into english of “is das so” might need a little work.

I’ve added a different one which reads a little better in English - see if you like it. By the way, I’ve also created some videos of WSH and also KLEE with english and German subtitles which might be interesting - or might not - anyway they are on my home page in real media format for what they are worth :)

Anyway here it is

Is it right that your heart each day in hours marks
Ist das so? / Is that right?
Ich meine muss das so? / I mean must it be like that?
Is it right that your view, the word saws into chunks
Ist das so? / Is that right?
Ich meine muss das so? / I mean must it be like that?

Dein Weg muss steinig sein / Your way must be so stony
Du musst gepeinigt sein / You must be so tormented
You must be insane should you so quickly agree
Nutz jede Lücke Mücke box dich groß und bück dich klein / Use every teeny tiny gap you’re big but you can fold up small
Nur wer allein lacht darf am Ende wirklich kleinlich sein / Those who laugh alone may in the end really seem small mided
Have you heard you should not applaud the daily grind
And after work then in lockstep through the evening rave
Will you forever fidget between your high and low
Fühlst du dich aufgehoben sag fühlst du dich aufgeschoben? / Do you feel rubbed out say, so you feel that you’ve been left hanging?
Wann wurde abgestimmt wer hat das vorgeschlagen? / When it was agreed who was it that proposed it?
I think I’m pretty certain but will still ask one more time

Ist das so? / Is that right?
Ich meine muss das so? / I mean must it be like that?
Ist das so? / Is that right?
Ich meine muss das so? / I mean must it be like that?
Ist das so? / Is that right?
Ich meine muss das so? / I mean must it be like that?
Ist das so? / Is that right?
oder ist es vielleicht viel leichter? / or is it maybe much easier?

Is this tomorrow worth a life without a heart today?
Is it worth each person fighting against a mindless mob?
What is a blissfull blink worth that just the druggists heard
Can anyone not be hurt and in the end be glad?
You can so long want to fight against your own rules
So lange Regeln in der Regel nur den Redner edeln / So long as rules are realy just for rules sake
Verflucht ihr weiter nur den Wind in euren trägen Segeln / Dammit all its just breeze in your empty sails
You can so far as I know not really measure it in raindrops
Wann wurde abgestimmt wer hat das vorgeschlagen? / When it was agreed who was it that proposed it?
I think I’m pretty certain but will still ask one more time

Ist das so? / Is that right?

Ist das so? / Is that right?
Ich meine muss das so? / I mean must it be like that?

Ist das so? / Is that right?
Ist das so,sein / must that be
Ist das so? / Is that right?
muss das so sein? / must that be so
Ist das so? / Is that right?
muss das so sein? / must that be so
sag mal: ist das so? / tell me: is that right?

Ist das so? / Is that right?

Hi Phill (and WSH-fans!)

You commented on the translation of “Nur ein Wort”: “wenn du auf den Mund fallen muesst Warum dann nicht auf meinen?

If your words don’t fall from your mouth Then why not fall onto to mine

Literally:

If you are quiet Why not on mine

I think this may be a better translation

Actually, “Auf den Mund fallen / gefallen” is a proverb in German: If you have fallen on your mouth, you are a silent person, someone who wouldn’t speak too soon. Judith plays with this proverb (as she does so often). She uses the literal meaning of the proverb in in the second sentence: if you have to fall on your mouth, fall on my mouth while doing so (so: kiss me!)

Hey,

Here’s some suggestions to polish up the version of ‘Von hier an blind’:

‘Blind from here’ (in the title and the chorus) is also what they use on en.wikipedia, but I’ve put a comment in the talk page there saying that ‘From here on blind’ actually makes more sense in English. It also fits the pattern of the original Deutsch.

‘Nothing to stay’ - I’m sure it’s just a typo: ‘Nothing to say’

‘And the swarm of bees in the gastric’ - Where you’ve got ‘gastric’ in any of the lines, replace with ‘stomach’.

‘The break gave me new ideas above my station’ - ‘The break put new ideas in my ears’

Thanks!

hello again, I have had a quick look on the information super-motorway :) and I don’t think there is a translation of this yet,
so in the spirit of adding to the general hero-noise here is a translation of Der Krieg kommt schneller zurück, als du denkst

Wie weit ist weit genug weg / How far is far enough away
Wie weit ist weg / How far is far
wie weit? / How far?
Was sind sechzig Jahre? / What are sixty years?
Ein Wimpernschlag / A eye-blink
in der Zeit / In time

Wie lang ist lange vorbei / How long is long enough ago
wie lang wann ist es vorbei / How long is long ago
Wie lang ist langweilig lang / How long is boringly long
wir waren schon lang nicht dabei / We were so long not involved

Was ist so lustig? / What is better
Was ist so lustig an Liebe und Frieden? / What is better a friend or a foe
Was ist so lustig? / What is better

Der Krieg kommt schneller zurück, als du denkst / The war comes back quicker than you think
Du kriegst zurück, was du verdrängst / You want back, what you displaced
Der Krieg kommt schneller zurück, als du denkst / The war comes back quicker than you think
Du kriegst zurück, was du verdrängst / You want back, what you displaced

Wie weit ist weit genug weg / How far is far enough away
Wie weit ist weg? / How far is far
Na warte / Well wait

Wie weit ist weit genug weg / How far is far enough away
Zehn Finger breit / A handspan
auf der Karte / On the map

Wie lang ist lange vorbei / How long is long enough ago
Wie lang wann ist es vorbei / How long is long ago
Wie lang ist langweilig langsam / How long is boringly slow
wären wir wieder dabei / We are back with it again

Was ist so lustig an Liebe und Frieden? / What is better
Was ist so lustig? / What is better a friend or a foe
Was ist so lustig an Liebe und Frieden? / What is better
Was ist so lustig? / What is better a friend or a foe

Der Krieg kommt schneller zurück, als du denkst / The war comes back quicker than you think
Du kriegst zurück, was du verschenkst / You want back, what you displaced
Der Krieg kommt schneller zurück, als du denkst / The war comes back quicker than you think
Du kriegst zurück, was du verschenkst / You want back, what you displaced

Der Krieg kommt schneller zurück, als du denkst / The war comes back quicker than you think
Du kriegst zurück, was du verschenkst / You want back, what you displaced
Der Krieg kommt schneller zurück, als du denkst / The war comes back quicker than you think
Du kriegst zurück, was du verschenkst / You want back, what you displaced

Der Krieg kommt schneller zurück, als du denkst / The war comes back quicker than you think
Du kriegst zurück, was du verpennst / You want back, what you wasted
Der Krieg kommt schneller zurück als, du denkst / The war comes back quicker than you think
Du kriegst zurück was du verpennst / You want back, what you wasted

Hello there! I absolutely love this page, and was inspired to do my own translation of Ein Elefant Für Dich, one that fits with the tune. It doesn’t surpass this translation in terms of word for word meaning, but you can sing it! I’ve probably messed up some of it, given that I’m an American student who’s only been learning German for 4 years, but here it is:

Wir Sind Helden – Ein Elefant Für Dich (An Elephant For You)

I see us both
You are long since too much
For my little arms but
I will not give you up
I know that your monsters
Are just like my own
And with those you’ll be
Much better not alone
And I know I know I know and I won’t ask
I will carry you, climb on and hold me fast

I’m getting giant-huge for you
An elephant for you
I’ll carry you for miles
O’er the land
and I’ll
take you as far as I can
take you as far as I can
at the end of the way if I could
I’ll carry you
carry you out of the wood

And he that shouldn’t,
he cries on the phone
and she that doesn’t want to
cries, but knows it though.
Your legs aren’t carrying you like they ought to
they go so often, they no longer want to
and I know I know and I won’t stand for that
I will carry you, climb on and hold me fast

I’m getting giant-huge for you
An elephant for you
I’ll carry you for miles
O’er the land
and I’ll
take you as far as I can
take you as far as I can
at the end of the way if I could
I’ll carry you
carry you out of the wood

(Ode) An die Arbeit

disclaimer: this is a rough translation. I had to look up a few words in a very good online dictionary (dict.tu-chemnitz.de) and I threw it together as well as I could. I’m finished with Honors German 3 so it shouldn’t be too bad, but I don’t expect it to be perfect.

Say it: you don’t have anything to do
Explain the work to me-
Work? Yes.
Work, my friend
That becomes work (he has to work to explain the work)

Whatever

So anyway,
What the sheep does with the grass
No work? Ach.
What you do with the sheep later?
That’s work. Aha.
Generally what’s fun?
No work. Och.
Generally what you do in the grass?
No work, ah yep

We sing:
Without work life would be empty (dreary, deserted, boring)
So I sing tired my little ode
Go to work!

And the lilies in the field have:
No work, yeah but-
They have no end, no (Jens?), no money, they have
No work, yeah I’ll admit that, but-
But who had tilled the soil of the field?
He has work, hm…
And if the world has no tilled fields?
In spite of that, work. (trotzdem is a curious word, but that’s the best translation)
And when you put up a tent in this field?
No work. Oh.
And if someone screams at the tent in the morning?
He has work. Ach.
A dog has work?
Yes, the dog has work.

We sing:
Without work, life would be empty
So I sing tired my little ode
Without work, life would be empty
So I sing tired my little ode
Go to work!

Go and 1 and 2 and 1 and 2 and:
You are Prussia!
One and two and one and two and one and two and: ready
Go to work!
Go and 1 and 2 and 1 and 2 and: end

When you fall out of the bed in the morning
That’s work- okay, I understood that
Who hardens his abdomen on a board:
That’s work- but that hurts

So, the atlas of the world
He has work- ach, now I’m hearing twice
Who holds an atlas for the world
He has.. ?
And he who rolls the stone down the mountain
He has work, yep
Who lifts up his leg to frolic around the mountain
No work.
Yeah, but once again, what’s with the dog?
No, the dog does work
Ah, yes

[chorus]

Whoever builds a house, plants a tree
He has work, that is clear
But he who looks out of the house, who dances around the tree
He does work.. alright, but if..

Now it lasts with both:
Go to work!

another translation. i was bored and i figured i’d translate my favorite song on the album.

They know exactly who you are – you are someone to us
They say it like it is – Nobody knows you well enough
And sure enough you are such and such a person – such and such! Somehow!
They understand you, and that makes her happy – so don’t ever change

But nothing is ever true with you, you know
Nothing ever dies with time
Only you’re never true, you know
Nothing is ever right
Nothing
Such and such
And anyway, nothing stays the same
Such and such
And anyway, nothing is there
Such and such
Don’t take my word for it
Is you (the hell?)

Such and such you have always been – exactly, except smaller
With age will that only become worse, exactly, except more alone
It’ll be good when you become loved for who you are – such and such, and so alone!
Just like you were, just like you are – is that you, must you be that?

[chorus]

Your father is happy, because he knows that you’re such and such
Your mother is happy, because she knows that you’re such and such
Your pet is happy, because it knows that you’re such and such
Your teacher is happy, because he knows that you’re such and such
Your friends are happy, it all makes sense, you’re such and such
At work: everybody is happy, it all makes sense, you’re such and such
At home: everybody is happy, it all makes sense, you’re such and such
And now you are exhausted, because you know you’re such and such

für nichts garantieren

yet another translation due to boredom.. note this is kind of a confusing song and some things may be translated wrong due to the nature of the grammar and/or proverbial statements

Do you see me
Do you see me
Do you see me
Don’t you see me?

You shut me in
In your dreams
You shut me in
You shut me in

You say you want
And that I stay
Are you sure?
I’m not sure.

Tell me, do you want what you see
Or do you see what you want
Do you see what you want
Don’t stay still, it turns
Stick to it, or stop it.
Do you hold it small? Unsuccessfully
Do you hold it far or keep it close?
Attention, it moves!

Are you coming with me?
I can’t guarantee anything
Or are you staying here?
I can’t guarantee anything
Will you stay with me?
I can’t guarantee anything
Do you trust me?
I can’t guarantee anything

Do you mean me
Do you really mean me?

You say you want
For me to stay
And forever
I say: not always
You hold me close
In your arms
You hold me close
You hold me close

Tell me, do you want what you see
Or do you see what you want
What it wants
Tell me, do you want in, do you hold steps
Or is your footstep too feeble?
Reject it or cover it up
See what a lightning strike creates

Soundso is a great song, but like many of Judith’s lyics they don’t translate easily into english.

There is a fatalism and bitter aceptance in the lyrics, and it is amongst the most poigniant of WSH songs.

I have done my best to keep the sprit so take from this translation what you will..

Soundso / anyway…

Sie wissen genau wer du bist / They know just exactly who you are
Du bist uns so einer / You are just like, one of us
Sie sagen es so wie es ist / They tell it just straight, like it is
So gut kennt dich keiner / So well that no one knows you
Und zwar bist du vom Wesen soundso / And it is just how its goes
Soundso so irgendwie / Anyway,whatever
Verstehen sie dich, das macht sie froh / You understand it keeps them happy
So einer ändert sich nie / If you never change
/
Aber nichts davon bestimmt dich, / But none of this decides your path
ich weißt du / I know you
Nichts davon verglimmt nicht mit der Zeit / Nothing is impossible given time
Nur du bestimmt nicht, ich weißt du / Not for you, I know you
Nichts davon ist / None of that
wirklich nichts davon / Really none of that
soundso / anyway
Und sowieso bleibt nichts davon / And anyway nothings left
soundso / anyway
Und sowieso ist nichts davon / And anyway it can’t be done
soundso / anyway
Glaub mir nichts davon / I don’t belive any of it
bist du / Do you?
/
Soundso warst du schon immer / Anyway, you were always you
Genauso, nur kleiner / Like that, but smaller
Im Alter wird sowas nur schlimmer / And older it only gets worse
Genauso, nur alleiner / Like that, but lonly
Wie gut wenn man geliebt wird, wie man ist / how good it is to be loved as you are
Soundso, und so allein / And anyway so alone
So wie du warst, so wie du bist / So how you were is how you are
Bist das du, musst du das sein? / Is that you? How you would be?
/
Aber nichts davon bestimmt dich, / But none of this decides your path
ich weißt du / I know you
Nichts davon verglimmt nicht mit der Zeit / Nothing is impossible given time
Nur du bestimmt nicht, ich weißt du / Not for you, I know you

Dein Vater ist froh, / Your father is fine
Weil er weiß, / Cos he knows
Du bist soundso! / You are anyway..
Und Mutter ist froh, / Your mother is fine

Hi there! First off: Awesome page you got here. With German being my native tongue, I actually don’t really need to visit this page but it’s quite interesting to take a look at the translations.
(And it’s easier to get quick access to several lyrics on here than on WSH’s official page, I’m a click-lazy person after all. XD)

So, after having read both translations for “Soundso”, I disagree with some parts of them like the chorus/refrain and offer my own translation here. Excuse the strange grammar now and then since I’m not a native English speaker.

They know exactly who you are - To us, you’re like one of those (*)
They say it like it is - Noone knows you as well as they do

Und zwar bist du vom Wesen so und so - So und so! So irgendwie!

Namely your nature is like that and that - That and that! Somehow like that!
When they understand you, it makes them happy - Someone like that never changes

[Refrain]

Aber nichts davon bestimmt dich, weißt du
Nichts davon verglimmt nicht mit der Zeit

But nothing of that defines you, you know
Nothing of that doesn’t fade with time

Nur du bestimmt nicht, weißt du
Nichts davon ist wirklich
Nichts davon

Only you surely won’t, you know
Nothing of that is real
Nothing of that

So und so
Und sowieso bleibt nichts davon

Like that and that / Anyway (**)
And anyway nothing of it stays

So und so
Und sowieso ist nichts davon

Like that and that / Anyway
And anyway nothing of it is

So und so
Glaub mir, nichts davon
Bist du

Like that and that / Anyway
Believe me, you’re nothing of that

You’ve always been like that and that - Exactly like that, just smaller
With age it’ll only get worse - Exactly like that, just lonelier

How nice if you get loved as you are - Like that and that, and so lonely!
As you were, as you are - Is that you, do you have to be that?

[Refrain]

Your father is happy because he knows you’re like that and that
Your mother is happy because she knows you’re like that and that

Your pet is happy because it knows you’re like that and that
Your teacher is happy because he knows you’re like that and that

Your friends are happy, alright, you’re like that and that
At work: everyone’s happy, alright, you’re like that and that

Zuhause: alle froh, alles klar, du bist so und so
Und du gehst k.o, weil du weißt du bist so und so
du gehst k.o, weil du weißt du bist so und so

At home: everyone’s happy, alright, you’re like that and that
And you break down because you know you’re like that and that
You break down because you know you’re like that and that

Weil du weißt du bist so und so
Nichts davon

Because you know you’re like that and that / anyway
Nothing of it

[Refrain]

(*) - Telling someone “Aha, so einer bist du also!” which is comparable to “Du bist uns so einer” means that you think he belongs to a specific group, e.g. having a special taste of music, fashion and so on. Also means that you finally understood which nature that person possesses.

(**) - So und so can be understood in two ways here: “Anyway” and “like that and that”. It can relate to either the previous verses or to the refrain/chorus itself.

Another translation, an easier one this time.

The Geek (Shall Inherit)

Are you too intelligent to not stand out unpleasantly
And not pretty enough to get by/away with it?
Do you know exactly how it is to always stand out
Just not far enough to be well received/arrive elsewhere?

It hurts to be like you should be
It hurts to be like you are - But when the
Quarterback approaches to take off your glasses, tell him:
Thanks, they’re staying where they are
I know:

[Refrain]
Die Verletzten sollen die Ärzte sein
Die Letzten sollen die Ersten sein
Sieh es ein: The Meek shall inherit the earth
Die Verletzten sollen die Ärzte sein
Die Letzten sollen die Ersten sein
Die Ersten sehen als Letzte ein:
The Geek shall inherit the earth

The injured shall be the medics
The last shall be the first
Accept it: The meek shall inherit the earth
The injured shall be the medics
The last shall be the first
The first accept it as the last ones:
The geek shall inherit the earth

Not your time, not your feet,
Not your beat, not your people,
Not your world and not even your pain
You don’t have to fit in here but look for what belongs to you
You don’t have to dance but move your heart

It hurts to be like you think you should be
It hurts to be like you think you are - But when the
Homecoming Queen approaches to kiss you awake
Tell her: Thanks, I haven’t missed anything
I know:

[Refrain]

It hurts to be like you think you should be
When your teacher asks you: Shouldn’t we meet each other more often?
It’s good to be like you think you want to
When you say: Lord, let that boor pass me

[Refrain]

Yush, I’m back with another translation! I apologize in advance for the horrible wording >_<. At least it still serves the purpose of understanding the song.

Die Konkurrenz

Du fährst dein Rad am Straßenrand
begehrst nicht andrer Weib noch Land
Begehren ist dir einerlei
Du pfeifst und singst und fühlst dich frei

You’re riding your bicycle at the roadside
Coveting neither another’s wife nor field
Desire doesn’t matter to you
You whistle and sing and feel free

Du pfeifst und singst und fühlst dich frei
Da zieht wer links an dir vorbei!
“Vorbeiziehen ist mir einerlei”
sagst du und wirst ganz blass dabei

You whistle and sing and feel free
Then to the left someone’s walking past you!
“Walking past someone doesn’t matter to me”
You say and turn fairly pale

[Refrain]
Die Konkurrenz
Die Konkurrenz schläft nicht
Die Konkurrenz
Die Konkurrenz schläft nicht

The competition
The competition never sleeps
The competition
The competition never sleeps

Sag’s mir, Hippiekind!

Tell me, hippie kid!

Now you’re standing on the roof of the world
The world comes to a halt and you like it
You take a deep breath and feel here (*)
You feel as if you were one with the world and yourself (**)

You feel as if you were one with the world and here
Suddenly someone’s standing next to you!
You’re one with yourself and the world
Until someone thinks he’s the number one

[Refrain]

Sag’s mir, kleiner Punk!

Tell me, little punk!

Da zieht wer links an dir vorbei
Sag, was macht die Konkurrenz?

Then to the left someone’s walking past you
Say, how does that affect you?
Your whistling doesn’t matter to him
Say, how does that affect you?
Then another one’s standing next to you and feels as if he was one
With what has been yours
Not his
Say, what’s the competition doing?

You’re working hand in hand
Tilling the field alongside others
In the morning you wake up together and early
And you’re singing: All for one! One for all

You’re singing: All for one! One for all
And then someone approaches and kills all others
In the morning you wake up quickly and early
And you’re singing: Now I’m the one and you’ll all die

[Refrain]

(*) - The meaning of this line is to feel the “here” and “now”, to feel this very moment in itself and be aware of it. Just in case the wording confuses you.

(**) - I’m not sure if it’s common to say “to be one with s.o./sth.” in English but I guess you’ll get it anyway.

So many (so much?) kaputt,
But so many (so much?) not.
Each of the fragments
Reflect the light.
So many kaputt,
But between the flames,
Between ashes and rubble,
Was something good.

Dein Vater ist kaputt
aber du bist es nicht
Zerbeult und verbogen
und vielleicht nicht ganz dicht
Aber irgendwo darunter bist du seltsam o.k
Beinah unversehrt unter allem, was weh tut

Your father is kaputt,
But you are not.
Bruised and bent,
And perhaps not in one piece,
But somewhere beneath all that, you are strangely okay,
Almost intact, under everything that is woeful.

Ich weiss du willst helfen
Ich weiss du grämst dich
Ich weiss du willst abhauen
Ich weiss du schämst dich

I know you want help.
I know you grieve yourself.
I know you want to run away.
I know you are ashamed.

Schnall dich an

It is okay - everyone should flee who can,
When (if?) you drive the getaway-car,
Buckle-up.

So viel kaputt
aber so vieles nicht …
[Refrain, So many (so much?) kaputt…]
Deine Mutter ist kaputt
aber du bist es nicht
Du trägst dieselben Verbände
Schicht über Schicht
Aber irgendwo darunter
bist du längst schon verheilt
Du hast viel zu lang
ihre Wunden geteilt

Your mother is kaputt,
But you are not.
You wear the same bandages,
Layer upon layer,
But somewhere beneath, you already healed, long ago.
For far too long, you have held your wounds open.

Ich weiss du willst helfen
aber du weisst nicht wie
Ich weiss du willst abhauen
aber das könntest du nie

I know you want help,
But you don’t know how.
I know you want to run away,
But you could never do that.

zieh dir Handschuhe an

It is okay - everyone should help who can,
When (if?) you tidy away (obliterate?) the broken pieces,
Put on gloves.

So viel kaputt
aber so vieles nicht …

_[Refrain, So many (so much?) kaputt…] _

Du hast es gefunden
Und du musst es tragen
für dich und für alle
die dich danach fragen

You have found it,
And you must carry (wear?) it,
For you and for everyone
Who asks about you.

Endlich Ein Grund Zur Panik

Endlich ein Grund zur Panik
Endlich ein Grund, los - Panik!
Endlich ein Grund zur Panik
Endlich ein Grund, los!

At last, a reason to panic.
At last, a reason, go - Panic!
At last, a reason to panic.
At last, a reason, go!

Endlich ein Zuhause
für deine wilden Träume
Endlich ein Grund - Los, spring!
Zurück auf die Bäume

At last, a home,
For your wild dreams,
At last, a reason - Go, jump!
Back into the trees.

Endlich ein Zuhause
für deine Schuld
Sag bloß
endlich ein Zuhause
Für deinen Puls, schlag
los

At last, a home,
For your sin (guilt?).
Say it straight.
At last, a home,
For your pulse,
Beat away.

Endlich ein Zuhause
für all die dunklen Gründe
Endlich ein Grund - Los, komm!
Wir schmieden neue Bünde

At last, a home,
For all the dark motives,
At last, a reason - Come on!

Endlich ein Tunnel

Sag bloß
Endlich ein Baum, ein Strick

Schlag los

At last, a tunnel,
For your vision (glance?).
Say it straight.
At last, a tree, a noose (cord?),
And a nod.
Beat away.

Endlich ein Grund zur Panik
Endlich ein Grund, los - Panik!

At last, a reason to panic.
At last, a reason, go - Panic!

Los, Panik!

Go, panic!

Endlich ein Zuhause
für all das Unerklärte
Endlich ein Grund - los, jagen
wir die bewährten Bärte

At last, a home,
For everything that is unexplained.
At last, a reason - Go,
We hunt the (approved beards?).

Endlich die Diagnose

Sag bloß!
Endlich ein Grund zur Panik
Augen auf, schlag, los!

Say it straight!
At last, a reason to panic.
Eyes open, beat away!

Labyrinth

Ich hab mich in dir verlaufen
wollte unverfroren
deine Haare zerraufen
hab den Halt verloren
jetzt lieg ich dir in den Ohren

I have lost myself in you,
Wanting, without embarassment,
To ruffle your hair.
I have lost my self-control (footing?).
(Now I am in your ears?).

Hab dir am Herzen gelegen
die ganze Nacht
Hab nur des Pfadfindens wegen
ein Kreuz hingemacht
und du hast gelacht

I have lain against your heart,
The whole night.
I have only, with my Pathfinder,
Gone in a circle,
And you laughed.

Kein Unten kein Oben
Keine Sonne kein Wind
Alle Wege verwoben ich stolpere blind
Kein Unten kein Oben
Keine Sonne kein Wind
Alle Wege verwoben ich stolpere blind
Durch dein Labyrinth

No above no beneath,
No sun no wind,
All paths tangled I stumble on blind.
No above no beneath,
No sun no wind,
All paths tangled I stumble on blind,
Through your Labyrinth.

Bin dir am Morgen drei Runden
um den Bart gegangen
abgerutscht und zwei Stunden
an deinen Lippen gehangen
und hab mich wieder gefangen

(In the morning I make three rounds?)
Of your beard.
(Slipping off?) and two hours,
Hanging on to your lips,
And I have trapped myself again.

Ich hab mich in dir verlaufen
wäre fast erfroren
musste den Kompass verkaufen
hab den Faden verloren
und immer wieder von vorn

I have lost myself in you,
Would be almost frozen to death,
Must sell the compass,
I have lost the thread,
And just keep on going forwards.

Der Krieg Kommt Schneller Zurück, Als Du Denkst

Wie weit ist weit genug weg
Wie weit ist weg
wie weit?
Was sind sechzig Jahre?
Ein Wimpernschlag

How far is far enough away?
How far is away?
How far?
What is sixty years?
The blink of an eye (the beating of an eyelash?),
In time.

Wie lang ist lange vorbei
wie lang wann ist es vorbei
Wie lang ist langweilig lang
wir waren schon lang nicht dabei

How long is long ago?
How long is in the past?
How long is too (boringly?) long?
We were already long-gone.

Was ist so lustig?
Was ist so lustig an Liebe und Frieden?
Was ist so lustig?

What’s so great?
What’s so great about love and peace?
What’s so great?

Du kriegst zurück was du verdrängst

War returns more quickly than you think.
You owe yet for your oppression.
War returns more quickly than you think.

Hallo Leute! I just recently discovered Wir sind Helden (i know, late!) and soon became a proud fan. This webpage has helped me a lot, since German is not my first language. Vielen Danke. However, I couldn’t help but notice that one of my favorite songs has not been translated yet, so I decided to try myself. I don’t expect it to be perfect, therefore any corrections are more than welcome. Again, thanks for this page!!

Lass uns verschwinden / Let us disappear

Denkst du nicht auch, die Welt - und ich meine / Don’t you also think (that) the world – and I mean
natürlich die eine - dreht sich längst von alleine / of course the only one – has been spinning for ages on its own?
Denkst du nicht auch, wenn wir verschwänden / Don’t you also think (that) if we vanished

Sie würden fragen, wo sind sie hin / They would ask, where have they gone
Ich werd niemandem sagen, wo ich bin / I will tell no one, where I am

Lass uns verschwinden, lass uns verschwinden / Let us disappear, let us disappear
Wir lösen uns auf, wir lösen uns auf / We dissolve, we dissolve
Lass uns verschwinden, lass uns verschwinden / Let us disappear, let us disappear
Wir lösen uns auf, da kommt keiner drauf / We dissolve, no one will find us

Ein kurzes Glimmen, dann ein Verschwimmen, / A brief glow, then blurring
dann ein Verschwinden und mit den Jahren / then a disappearance and with the years
oder auch Stunden, oder Sekunden / or maybe hours, or seconds
schließt sich die Welt da wo wir waren / the world closes right where we were

Sie würden fragen, wo sind sie hin / They would ask, where have they gone
Ich werd niemandem sagen, wo ich bin / I will tell no one, where I am

Vielleicht wärst du Seetang, ich wäre Krill / Perhaps you’d be seaweed, I would be krill
We would be waves, and then we’d be still
über uns Möwen, hungrig und schrill - / over us seagulls, hungry and shrill
aber uns wär egal, ob die Möwe was will / but we wouldn’t care whether the seagull wanted anything

Should they ask: where have they gone
Ich werd niemandem sagen wo ich bin / I will tell no one, where I am

Lass uns verschwinden, lass uns verschwinden / Let us disappear, let us disappear
Wir lösen uns auf, wir lösen uns auf / We dissolve, we dissolve
Lass uns verschwinden, lass uns verschwinden / Let us disappear, let us disappear
Wir lösen uns auf, da kommt keiner drauf / We dissolve, no one will find us

Lass uns verschwinden, lass uns verschwinden / Let us disappear, let us disappear
Wir lösen uns auf, wir lösen uns auf / We dissolve, we dissolve
Lass uns verschwinden, lass uns verschwinden / Let us disappear, let us disappear
Wir lösen uns auf, da kommt keiner drauf / We dissolve, no one will find us

Denk eine Nase auf warmem Asphalt, / Imagine a nose on the warm concrete
Der Hund wäre froh, die Nase wär kalt / The dog would be happy, the nose would be cold
Das wäre ich, oder auch nicht / That would be me, or maybe not
Oder auch du, und ich schaute zu / Or maybe you, and I would look on

And they will ask: where have they gone
Der Hund wird nicht sagen, wo ich bin / The dog won’t say where I am

Hello, these translations seem to fall into two camps. 1 - people who want to translate the words into english 2 - people who want to translate the meaning into english

I fall in the 2nd camp.

My first language is english, so when I translate “so und so” into “whatever”, its not because I don’t know it can be translated a whole number of different ways - “thingy”, “such and such”, “this and that” its because I think that Judith had in mind a dismissive wave of the hand, a mind that did not want to see and so just said “du bist so und so” and did not name it. And when its translated, it makes sense to the english ear to say “whatever” - its not right, its not wrong its a matter of interpretation. Interpretation of poetry.

And, so hey if you didn’t like “so und so” as “whatever”, I guess you will hate this one too - ho hum, there is room enough for so many views I think.

Anyway, I note that there is a missing translation of “Stiller” - and I’m guessing that one reasin is that its becasue its a poem, translating poetry is entirely - well poetic. Its int the mind of the reader.

In my mind what this is about is “grasping for the word”, reaching for it and not finding it The last stanza is hard, and bitter and I appologise to Judith if I have the maening wrong but the remaining verses are I think what she meant, but in english words and phrases. They are not and are not maent to be translations of the words - what would be the point? you could get that by pasting it into babel fisch, but it would make no sense.

The following is the best I can do to translate Judith’s poetry into english..

I hope it is acceptable…

Stiller

Täglich rede ich mir mein Leben / Every day I talk to myself
Aus U-Bahn Fahrplaneinzelpunkten. / From the structure of a metro-plan
Aus Oben ohne Ohneboden / From topless to bottomless
Ohne Schweigen / Without silence
Rastlos, nie ratlos / Restless, not clueless
Niemals Sprachlos / Never speechless
Fehle ich den Worten / Still, I can’t find the words

Ich versuche mir die Welt zu erklären / I try to explain the world
Als ob zwischen Punkten Linien wären / As if I could join up the dots
Als ob die Worte mir die Welt in Streifen teilten / As if the words could be divided into strips
Ich greife nur und kann nicht begreifen / I catch them, but don’t understand them

Was nützten mir meine Hände / In my hands they seem useful
Wenn das was sie berührten verschwände / But when I touch them they disappear
As if the things the words mean
Verstummen und sich schweigend entwinden / Grow silent and become entagled in silence

Ich bin nicht stiller / I am not quiet
nur die Worte fehlen / Only the words are missing
Ich bin nicht stiller / I am not quiet
nur die Worte verfehlen ihr Ziel / Only the words miss their goal
Ich bin nicht stiller / I am not quiet
Ich will so gerne schweigen / I want to be happily silent
und still, viel stiller / And quietly, yet more quietly
auf alles nur zeigen und still / To everything just point wordlessly
still und schillernd / Quietly and shimmeringly
zeigte sich mir - / What they show me

Ich versuche mich der Welt zu erklären / I try to explain to the world
Als ob zwischen Funken Linien wären / As if I could join up the dots
As if I could only touch the words
And so I catch them but don’t understand them

Was nützen mir die schönen Gedanken / What matters is the beautiful meaning
Die zwischen all den Anderen versanken / That somehow sinks between them
Because the source of the thoughts is all leaden
Weil alles was sie finden vorbei ist / Because everything they mean is all gone

appolgies to Judith - a poetess of our age..

Thanks for this translation Christine. Wir Sind Helden’s lyrics are definitely extremely tricky to get right because they just love having loads of different word games in there which rely on how words are related or sound in German. And in many cases you can’t get all these details (like the multiple ways to think about soundso, say) into short English expression that is suitable for lyrics. There definitely is space for both the free and the literal translations of the lyrics – and for plenty of explanations I guess.

I only had time to skim your translation right now but I think that the beginning of the last verse may be slightly wrong. In particular it should be a question. I think it should be something along the lines of ‘What’s the use of the beautiful thoughts / thank sank between (all) the others”

Hi Caro

I’ve read your translations, they’re quite good, it was nice to look at holofernes texts in english. keep up the good work ;-)

i write because of this trouble line in ‘Nur ein Wort’:

“Wenn du schon auf den Mund fallen musst Warum dann nicht auf meinen”

auf den Mund fallen - it’s being so tired that you literally {fall on your face} the meaning is to go to sleep ——> so the whole phrase is: [why don’t you go to bed WITH ME]

Caro, do you write in german yourself? what if? cheers prot

Hi Caro, et. al.

As a German novice I am very thankful that someone is opening up the world of Wir Sind Helden lyrics to me. By incredible fluke I found this band, which isn’t exactly well known here in Canada. I can’t stop playing these tunes!!! The more I learn about the lyrics, the music, and the artist’s views, the more I find myself comparing them to one of my favorite Canadian bands, Metric. Any fan of Wir Sind Helden should check out Metric.

If anyone is interested in discussing this comparison feel free to email me. a_singbeil@yahoo.ca Thanks again!

hey prot … actually … “auf den Mund fallen” comes from the proverb “auf den Mund gefallen” … which is kind of a mean way of saying that someone is shy and doesn’t talk alot

ohh … and christine … i think it should be

“Every day I recount to myself my life (though really recount isn’t quite the right translation either … it’s more of an “i explain my life to myself” but not quite) Out of metro map stops, Out of topless without bottom. Without silence. Restless, never clueless (though … it’s more of a “never without suggestions”) Never speachless The words fail me”

“I try to explain the world to myself As if there were lines inbetween the points, As if the words would divide the world into strips. I reach but I can’t understand.”

“What use are my hands to me, If everything they touched disappeared, (allusion to Midas ^_^ ) Just like things, when words find them, (that commas in there are vital … if they weren’t there … the entire sentence would mean something entirely different =o) ) grow quiet and leave in silence.”

k … that is all i have time for now … but … if i find some more time some time soon i’ll come back and see what else i can fix up a bit …

p.s. “I’m not quieter” … not “i’m not quiet” :)

auf wiedersehen fuer jetzt

Hello to everyone!

You’re doing an amazing job! I’m from Brazil and I have an brazilian community about Wir sind Helden (Wir sind Helden Brazil). There, me and other people translate the WsH lyrics to portuguese, and we think that’s difficult to, because Judith is not just a singer, is a poetess, and there are many games in her texts…^_^

I met WsH in 2005, and I’ve been trying to transate their lyrics. 2 months after “Von hier an Blind” arrive, I and Cristiane (a member of a WsH community)had translated all the 47 musics of the band to portuguese. And, now, I see that would be easier if we had had lyrics in English…

Thank you for thejob, we are using that to help us in the translations…

Feel free to see our translations to portuguese, if you need it! ^_^

Kisses!

Every day I analyse my life using the stations on the subway map from above without bottomless without silence restless, never clueless never out of words the words miss me

I try to understand the world as if I could do a dot to dot picture as if words would divide the world into strips I only stand but can’t understand

What use would be my hands if everything they’d touch would disappear just like everything replaced by explanations ceases to make sound and slips away silently

I am not more quiet only the words are missing I am not more quiet the words are just missing the target I am not more quiet I’d be so gladly silent and quiet… more and more to just silently point at everything quiet and dazzling I would be guided

I try to explain myself to the world as if there would be currents between sparks as if the words couldn’t express either what I am trying to understand

What use are all those beautiful thoughts to me which drowned together with all the other thoughts because the heart of the mind is made of lead because all it can think of is gone

I think I can shed some light on the lyrics to “Labyrinth”, if you wouldn’t mind making a correction or two.

The whole song’s really kind of clever; it uses German idioms that are based on body parts, and she’s talking about his body being a metaphorical labyrinth, using the parts in the idioms as places on the way through. It’s a beautiful and brilliant song.

Ich hab mich in dir verlaufen
wollte unverfroren
deine Haare zerraufen
hab den Halt verloren
jetzt lieg ich dir in den Ohren

I lost myself in you
I shamelessly wanted
To mess up your hair
I lost my hold
And now I’m laying on your ears*

(* - “Laying on somebody’s ears” is a German phrase that refers to pestering/nagging someone. So, literally in this song, she’s messing up his hair, slips and falls into his ear. Metaphorically, I interpret it as her saying she’s just joking around with him and ends up pestering him.)

Hab dir am Herzen gelegen
die ganze Nacht
Hab nur des Pfadfindens wegen
ein Kreuz hingemacht
und du hast gelacht

I lay on your heart**
The whole night
And only because of what I learned in the scouts
Left a cross
And you laughed

(** - to have someone/thing laying on one’s heart is like “having something on your heart” in English. It’s a spin on having something on your mind and implies an emotional connection.)

Kein Unten kein Oben
Keine Sonne kein Wind
Alle Wege verwoben ich stolpere blind
Kein Unten kein Oben
Keine Sonne kein Wind
Alle Wege verwoben ich stolpere blind
Durch dein Labyrinth

No up, no down
No sun, no wind
I stumble blindly down all the mixed-up paths
No up, no down
No sun, no wind
I stumble blindly down all the mixed-up paths
Through your labyrinth.

Bin dir am Morgen drei Runden
um den Bart gegangen
abgerutscht und zwei Stunden
an deinen Lippen gehangen
und hab mich wieder gefangen

In the morning
I went around your beard three times*
I slipped and was hanging
From your lips for two hours**

And trapped myself again

(* - “Go around somebody’s beard” is the German phrase equivalent to “Buttering up”/”Sweet-talking” in English.

** - To “hang from somebody’s lips” is the German phrase equivalent to “Hanging on somebody’s every word” in English.

Literally: I went three rounds around your beard. I slipped and was hanging from your lips for two hours and trapped myself again. Figuratively: I sweet-talked you and slipped up, and was hanging on your every word for two hours and trapped myself again.

To read into it further, I interpret it as her saying that she was trying to sweet-talk him and slipped up, which resulted in her hanging on his every word for two hours and getting caught up in him again.)

Ich hab mich in dir verlaufen
wäre fast erfroren
musste den Kompass verkaufen
hab den Faden verloren
und immer wieder von vorn

I lost myself in you
And would’ve almost frozen
I had to sell the compass
And I lost the thread*
And did it time after time from the beginning.

(* - “Faden” has a few different meanings in both German and English. I’m sure most of you have heard about tying a piece of red thread around your finger to remember something, which is a use of the word in German as well. More commonly and in this case, though, she’s using the thread in one typical way someone can navigate a maze: tying a string/thread to something near the beginning and then unwinding it so they’ll have something to follow back. Faden, however, can also mean “clue”, thus making another double meaning for this song.)

I hope that clears up some of the confusion with the song. It’s probably my favorite by them.

This comment is pertaining to Echolot: I think that this translation, which is a little bit looser, gets the gist of the song better and its how I would sing it in english.

Hold Still Our beds are rafts and, out at sea, I will come find you Among us liquid leads in Grey shadows moving slowly past us

Stars and water and in between We come, we swim with the big fish

I see your heart its calling through waves in the sea I see your heart I know we go down deep to the bottom

Down here We know they will see us dancing in glistening dust We sink blessed and deaf silent and waiting quietly shadows and circles are pulling closer

Stars and water and in between We come, we swim with the big fish

I see your heart Its calling through waves in the sea I see your heart The little red thing does not hurt long I see your heart Stay but don’t stand still We kiss I see your heart I know we go down deep to the bottom

I just wanted to say “Thank you so much!” to everyone on this page. I’m not a native German speaker but I absolutely adore Wir Sind Helden’s music and this site has been extremely helpful in understanding the meaning and some of the nuances in the songs.

That being said, I would love Wir Sind Helden even if I had no idea what the words themselves meant. There’s something special in music like their’s that overcomes differences in language or geography, something that can speak to love, kindness, silliness, and a collective shared human experience. It’s beautiful and powerful and reminds me that the world is not always a cold uncaring place. That no matter how awful the world may seem, there is beauty and wonder in it. We won’t stop speaking, even though at times, words may fail us (oh “Stiller,” how I love you).

So once again, thank you everyone. I am truly grateful.

Hello ! I would like to add a comment to your translation of “Guten Tag” (2005). I would suggest that it rather be : “Germans flirt in a very subtle way”, as “subtil” is an adverb and not an adjective (sorry for being punctilious). For my part, I wondered what the expression “für ein Hallelujah und Bohnen” could well mean. I am German, but I don’t understand it. I’ll come back to this site one of these days, good work. G. Relating to Die Konkurrenz:

My German friends tell me the end of the song is unrelated to violence:

They tell me: und dann kommt einer und macht alle Anderen alle And then someone approaches and kills all others is more along the lines of: And then someone comes and does better than the others

And also that: Und du singst: jetzt bin ich der eine und ihr Anderen seid Alle is more like: And you’re singing: Now I’m the one and you’re all just ‘the others’

In Labyrinth, there is a small mistake. You switched the translations for “Kein Unter/ Kein Oben”. Unter= beneath/under and Oben= above, but it reads reversed.

In Endlich ein Grund zur Panik, is a word game, which is important to understand the meaning of this song. Endlich ein Grund, los - Panik! = At last, a reason, go - Panic! The translation is right, but Grund, los is the same as Grundlos and this word means without a reason.

I´m from germany, so sorry for my bad english.

I love WSH and I think it’s great that this site has become a WSH shrine on the `net. It’s funny how that happens sometimes.

Anyway, does anyone know of other bands that use female vocals and extensive wordplay, with a mixture of musical styles to jazz things up? The closest I can think of in English is Metric (as mentioned by someone above), but if there’s a band that exists in Russian I’d love you forever if you mentioned it to me :D

This page is the best! I’m learning German, and listening to Wir Sind Helden while looking at the English lyrics is really helping me learn new words and syntax. I have noticed, however, that one of my favourite songs, Streichelzoo, isn’t here. If someone could post a translation, I’d be so grateful!

Thanks everyone for the translations! I love Wir Sind Helden. I saw that Hände Hoch hadn’t been translated yet, so I decided I’d give it a go. My German isn’t great, but hopefully this is good enough.

Hände Hoch/Hands Up

It’s over, you’re surrounded The whole world is around you They don’t ask what appeals to you They just say: So be it (this could also be “it is so” or “it is”)

You have to take so much time But don’t defend yourself anymore Keep the pain in your chest But don’t defend yourself anymore

Put your hands up Surrender Repeat after me: So be it Hands up Surrender So be it So be it

Was ist dabei? Du bist umstellt Was du so fest umklammert hältst ist nicht mal das was du bestellt hast Schau dich an: so ist es

What is this? You’re surrounded What you so tightly clutch Isn’t even what you’ve ordered Look: so be it

Your take is your burden Come, don’t defend yourself anymore Cry all the tears that you have But don’t defend yourself anymore

Put your hands up Surrender Repeat after me: So be it

It’s over, you’re surrounded The whole world is around you They don’t ask what appeals to you and regardless, sometimes they do (This last line is weird for me, since I speak English, but I think that’s close enough.)

Ändere alles was du kannst aber wehr dich nicht mehr Ändere alles was du musst aber wehr dich nicht mehr

Change everything you can but don’t defend yourself anymore Change everything that you must But don’t defend yourself anymore

On Soundso, I personally think that “so und so” translates right into “so and so”, which in English, is just a place holder for a non-specific person. For instance, one could say “If I were to go with so and so to such and such a place” meaning go with anybody anywhere. I think the meaning of “Du bist soundso” is that “You’re so and so”. Nobody takes notice of them. They’re ignored, and nobody remembers their name or anything specific about them that stands out. So it basically has a similar meaning to what everyone else thinks, but it seems pretty easy to decide which word works best. Just translate it directly, it still makes sense.

In reference to ,,Wenn es Passiert” -

I’ve always interpreted Herzschlag and Blitzschlag as something ,,painful.”

Zum Beispiel, Herzschlag would be a ,,heartache.” A heartache for me, and everyone around me. And Blitzschlag as a painful blow, something devastating. A heartbreak for me, and everyone around me.

Another thing I just saw, in reference to ,,Labyrinth”

The line: jetzt lieg ich dir in den Ohren

means ,,I’m in stuck in your head.”

In English we say ,,It’s stuck in my head,” and in German it’s ,,a worm stuck in my ear.”

The Ballad of Wolf and Brigitte (thats not easy to translate because wir sind helden used a lot of proverbs and metaphors here, but its still a great song, so let me try. The german version sounds a lot more fluid than the english translation though ;)

When Wolf and Brigitte moved to the Bärwald Street everyone thought they were a couple. They had a box together (to jump into a box means to have sex in german) but the thing with the relationship may not have been that clear to gitte.

Und Manfred und Irene war’n für alles offen, And Manfred and Irene were open to everything und Irenes Arme waren es auch. and Irenes’ arms were too Und wenn Wolf und Brigitte richtig besoffen war’n, and when Wolf and Brigitte where really drunk schliefen sie auf Irenes Bauch. they slept on Irenes belly.

Und am Morgen saßen alle zusammen in der Küche And in the morning they were all sitting together in the kitchen und Brigitte kraulte Manfred den Bart. and Brigitte was petting Manfreds beard Und Irene stand an der Spüle und sang and Irene was standing at the sink nur Wolfang saß weinend im Bad only Wolfgang sat crying in the bathroom

Für das Wahre, Schöne, Gute will jeder gerne bluten For the real, beautiful good everyone wants too bleed und fühlen was es zu fühlen gibt. and feel what there is too feel Es war alles schön und gut, es gibt nichts was man nicht tut Everything was good and fine there is nothing you don’t do - aber Wolfgang hat Brigitte geliebt. but Wolfgang loved Brigitte

Und sie fuhren nach Südspanien, ihren Horizont zu weiten, And they were going to southern Spain to broaden there horizon und das letzte bisschen Muff zu verlier’n. and to loose the last bit of spleen Im dritten Jahr lernten sie, die Wellen zu reiten, in the third year they learned to ride the waves nur Wolfgang lernte fotografier’n. only Wolfgang learned to photograph

Auf den Fotos spiel’n die Kinder im Sand - wie bei Bob Dylan on the photos the kids are playing in the sand- like with Bob Dylan und Muscheln fallen aus ihrer Hand. and mussels are falling out of there hand Wenn die ander’n längst schon im Zelt lagen und schliefen When the others were long gone into there tents and sleeping saß Wolfgang alleine am Strand. Wolfgang sat alone at the beach

Für das Wahre, Schöne, Gute will jeder gerne bluten For the real, beautiful good everyone wants too bleed und fühlen was es zu fühlen gibt. and feel what there is too feel Es war alles schön und gut, es gibt nichts was man nicht tut Everything was good and fine there is nothing you don’t do Aber gitte hat den wolf nicht geliebt But gitte did not love Wolf

Dann zog Brigitte nach Ibiza und verkaufte Batiksachen, Then Brigitte moved to ibiza and traded batik stuff Wolf kündigte, um bei ihr zu sein. Wolf resigned to be with her Nach ein paar Wochen sagte Gitte: “Ich wollte eigentlich ‘nen Schnitt machen, After a few weeks gitte said: “I actually wanted to make a cut” und frei sein, du engst mich ein.” “and be free you are confining me”

Und noch im Flughafencafe sah er den Flieger landen, And even still in the airport cafe he saw the plane land Irene kam mit schwerem Gepäck. Irene came with heave luggage Und einem Aufkleber vom Zoll auf Spanisch, der wohl sagte: and a sticker from customs that read Ich bin angekommen und geh nicht mehr weg. I have arrived and will never leave

Für das Wahre, Schöne, Gute will jeder gerne bluten For the real, beautiful good everyone wants to bleed aber Brigitte hat Irene geliebt. but Brigitte loved Irene Es war alles schön und gut, es gibt nichts was man nicht tut, Everything was good and fine, there is nothing you don’t do aber Manfred hat Gabi geliebt. but Manfred loved Gabi

Für das Wahre, Schöne, Gute will jeder gerne bluten For the real, beautiful good everyone wants to bleed aber Gabi hat Wolfgang geliebt. but Gabi loved Wolfgang Es war alles schön und gut und es brauchte sehr viel Mut, Everything was good and fine and it took a lot of courage aber Dieter hat Reinhard geliebt. but Dieter loved Reinhard

Es war alles schön und gut, es gibt nichts was man nicht tut, Everything was good and find and there is nothing one doesnt do - aber Wolfgang hat Brigitte geliebt. but Wolfgang loved Brigitte

Its a beautiful song with a beautiful text and my translation doesnt do it any justice. An ironic song about a hetero loving a homosexual and sexually very active person actually :)

Hello :) I am going to explain the phrase in “Nur ein Wort”, called “Wenn du schon auf den Mund fallen musst, warum dann nicht auf meinen”

A German proverb is “auf die Nase fallen” = to fall down If people kiss, their mouthes are touching. So, Judith sings the changed German proverb. There is a person who falls down, but not like in the proverb on his nose, but rather on his mouth. So, when he falls on his mouth anyway, he could kiss her.
