Back in the 1980s

156 words

Recently I was surprised by a bank wanting to sell me things going downhill. Which sparked my interest in bank communications and let me look at their other ads when passing. Turns out that their actual problem may be that they are stuck in the 1980s. Another ad, for example advertises some ‘global’ aspect of their business. And illustrates it with a rather old Jumbo jet:

But once you get in the 1980s spirit, things start coming together an making sense. Not just the ‘style’ and ‘class’ of their staff but also the fact that most banks – even today – aren’t able to print out statements in anything but monospaced typefaces. They have expensive touch screen terminals running slow Windows software, but even those system are technically able to use and even print variable width fonts. But still, time after time you get things like this:

Must be an æsthetic principle rather than mere incompetence…
