THE GERMAN HANSE



In the middleages privileged union of German merchants in foreign countries. The Hanse envolved in the 12th century after German merchants had achieved economic control over the Baltic region. Foreign com offices in Norway, England, Russia and other countries were established.

The economical power of the Hanse was focused on trading in the Baltic sea, the countries of which were like that incorporated into the market of Western Europe. The golden times of the Hanse was between 14th and the 15th century. The member cities (Bremen, Lübeck, Hamburg etc.) had enormous economical advantages. After the defeat of Lübeck against the Scandinavians 1536 the economically dominating position of the Hanse members was broken. The Scandinavians freed from the economical tutelage. Thus the Hanse became unimportant for the further history.
