I surfed by Apple's German home page today. As on its .com counterpart they advertise the new iBook prices. Now, what's $999 in the US is converted by Apple to €1275 adding 16% tax and a tiny bit for the exchange rate plus some bit for Steve's pleasure - you do the math.

While having the four-digit price may not be good psychologically, this isn't the bad thing. The bad thing is, they claim it's the cheapest portable Mac of all times. As it happens, I recently used up a lot of my very old scratch paper. The back (formerly front) of which contained an article about which Mac to buy from around 1995, when they were giving away Powerbook 150s for less than DM 2000 (about €1956).
