Grüner Libanon

435 words

After uni, I had a quick snack at a recently re-opened 'fast' food shop called Grüner Libanon (Green Lebanon), offering 'Original Falafel'. We've been there a couple of times before for our lunch break and their falafels aren't bad. Funniest thing is, though, that the owner is always telling little stories – about Africa, about South America or about Lebanon, of course. Apparently he has been around. There'll also be little samples of food, or a bit of tea while you're waiting which is nice.

It's particularly nice as the food isn't exactly fast there. They fry the falafels to order, so it always takes a while. Yassin pointed out to me the other day that this is quite typical for non-Turkish Imbißes. While there seem to be large-ish companies these days to supply the Turkish fast-food places with more or less ready-made food for parts of their menu, the others still make everything themselves, and take pride in it.

The Grüner Libanon also happens to give you quite a good deal, selling a falafel wrap and a drink for €3. In addition to the standard carbonated sugar water they also have funny exotical juices and Ayran on sale. I like the latter. It's very refreshing on hot days.

After that I went to meet people at an outdoor theatre performance of Schiller's Kabale und Liebe. They currently stage it in the student theatre and put on this extra, free outdoors show. While this is an appealing idea, I am not quite sure it is a good idea. For the lack of walls, just listening to the actors was quite difficult once they happened not face you. Also, the lack of the more formal setting enabled people to consume their own drinks, cigarettes or spliffs which is nice but also to leave their manners at home. Having a pizza delivered or not turning of a mobile phone is still rude in an open air event where other people try to listen and the performers have to concentrate.

Anyway, I left halfway through as I wasn't too impressed by the performance and it started to be chilly with the little cold I contracted acting up. Embarrassingly, during the interval we couldn't remember who exactly was going to die in the end...

Back at home, I immediately received an iChat Audio message from my brother in San Diego. Worked very smoothly. Weather is good, still no flat, though. Afterwards we celebrated a bit into Ansgar's birthday in our flat.

A new word I learned in e-mail correspondence: dilapidated – used in the context of British railways...
