Canon Ixus 70

Extra features

Look closely and see how the camera spotted the face in the picture and marked it by the green rectangle. The ‘rule of thirds’ lines are also visible, as are bars at the top and bottom to indicate a 3:2 aspect ratio.

The display of my Ixus 55 camera broke and I just wanted a new digital camera to replace it afterwards. The Ixus 70 (known as PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph in the US) was on offer for a good price so I got that one. And – so far – it hasn’t fallen apart and it is working quite well.

The Ixus 70 camera has 7 megapixels which probably is a bit too much for a camera of this size. I haven’t done precise testing yet, but my impression is that shooting at the top resolution isn’t really worth it as you won’t get the full quality anyway. Particularly if you aren’t using the lowest ISO setting out of the camera’s range from 80 through 1600 (where you get plenty of static in the image in the 800 and 1600 settings.

Things I surprisingly like about the camera are its clean and angular design, its ‘face recognition’ which can spot faces and focus on them while looking around and the ‘rule of thirds’ lines it will draw in the display.
