The week's over, after a dash of seminars today. Currently two girls in our department are celebrating their PhDs. We already had drinks and a barbecue and they've just started the music (not exactly my taste, though).

- On Powerpoint,
- a piece on nations that has the right feel to it although I suspect it may be wrong in a few details. While I'm not particularly attached to Germany, I think growing up in a place makes this feel more like 'home' and in particular makes you notice differences in other places more. On the other hand, I suppose I'd feel more at home in Holland than in Bavaria. So it's more a cultural thing than the name of the country on your passport.
- How does nationalism relate to patriotism, by the way? As both concepts don't make a lot of sense to me, I can't see any. Anyway, our friends in the U.S. still seem to be fierce patriots
- Saw the new Adam Green CD at the record store. Hope the vinyl will be in by tomorrow. He played in Germany in May and I didn't know about it. This country could do with a comprehensive website listing gigs and selling tickets. I can't constantly check the web sites of all the bands I like.
- Downloaded and successfully analysed our phonebill with Rechnungs Checker yesterday. It was very quick – once I had the file, that is. The buggers at Deutsche Telekom manage to crap their websites with so many frames, JavaScript and hidden forms that neither Safari nor Camino manage to do that simple file download. I still fail to understand why anyone would think having that much nonsense for a simple download is a good idea.
