Bild – Germany’s Sun – is plastering the streets with these posters now:

Bild ad at a bus stop

with the text saying ‘Every truth needs a brave person to speak it’. They have similar ads with Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Copernicus. And I immediately cringed when seeing it. This is just wrong for a paper like Bild. Not only aren’t they brave – it’s a free state after all and as long as you don’t insult people too much (or start talking some Nazi-crap) everybody can speak out whatever truths they need to speak out. But they are more known for their half-truths and lies anyway. An in addition they are not known for honouring smart people, non-Germans or non-whites. So their choice of ‘poster-boys’ seems a bit – err, off.

But on the other hand, it must be tremendous fun for them to run those ads. Their readers won’t understand who the people on them are anyway. And idiots like myself will notice them. Oh, well. Now tell me in which respect this is different from the ‘Think different’ ads Apple ran back in the nineties. They had pretty much the same poster boys. And they’re pretty much a big and partly questionable capitalistic entity… yet I thought those were quite good.
