So we did go and watched the new James Bond film on Monday night. And it was funny at its best but mediocre over all. It was based on a diamond theme with bits of Highlander-style swordfighting, Robocop-esque man-machine stuff, a bit of Œdipus and other would-be references or sad copies thereof thrown in.

And it's so terribly up-to-date: Villains from axis-of-evil North Korea (but still politically correct enough for them to be not officially liaised with the government) here, a bit of genetic-therapy there, an invisible car (what the hell did they think?) etc. Some of the action scenes just looked terribly unrealistic and the car chases were fun to watch - make it one of those virtually indescructible cars for me as well, please!

Also, Bond's lines to initially pull Hale Berry are unbearably tacky. We've seen him do better and more in style in the past.

Talking of the past and a diamond themed Bond - Diamonds are forever springs to mind. It was on telly earlier this year (which is probably true for any Bond film and any year...) and it's one of my favourite Bond films - a lot of fun.
