... Master fonts and what they could do (via Betalogue). I once used the Multiple Master version of Myriad ages ago, which was fun. But the technology never really seems to have taken off, sadly. The same holds for the similar techniques offered by QuickDraw GX. Probably there's not enough demand for this thing by people to justify spending a lot of money in the development of fonts to actually use this. Once more, TeX was and is at the forefront of sophisticated font techniques. The Computer Modern family of fonts has sixty-something variables which determine the the looks of the font. The whole family, including serif, sans-serif, extra-bold and italic faces in a variety of design sizes, is generated from the same basic algorithms with only a different set of parameters. Sadly there is no graphical user interface to access all this. But Donald E. Knuth (nice interview with him here) once did a little text where the characters morphed slowly from the beginning to the end of the text.
