Snapshots

308 words

Whenever I see people using a digital camera, I start thinking that I'd quite like having one myself. Whenever starting to consider getting one, there seem to be too many hard choices to make and too little expertise on my side / reliable information available to make an informed decision.

To begin with, I don't want to do professional photography, I'd want the camera more for snapshots. So I am definitely in favour of a small camera rather than the latest and greatest that technology and optics can offer. Trying to stay within a reasonable budget points the same way.

I quite like my mum's camera. It's a Canon Ixus 330 (?), I think, and it's quite tiny while making mostly good pictures. Mostly, I say because I found the results disappointing in low-light conditions, when trying to take photos of bands in January. Richard's camera did a much better job in the dark. The other dislike is that it doesn't offer manual focus. As the autofocus likes to get things wrong, I like having that as a back up strategy. Besides, adding it to the camera's features seems to be a software rather than a hardware problem. Thirdly, and most irritatingly, the camera's optical view-finder is more than a little bit off from the photos you actually take.

The final problem I have seen with about any digital camera I used so far is that everything mechanic seems to work with a slight delay: Zooming, focusing etc. only start a split-second after you press the button and stop again with the same kind of delay. Not very helpful, when trying to adjust something 'just right'. And hard to understand as well – there are so many electric things which allow smooth adjustment, why don't they do it for cameras?

Any hints or good experiences to share?
