Leif, Stephie and me saw Liegen Lernen today – a new German film about a guy growing up in the 1980s, meeting a girl – the girl – who vanished shortly after. He needs the rest of the decade to cope with that and move on and commit himself to somebody else.
Not a terribly complex abstract story here but many little events, observations and details. The same books we had when we were young. The same appliances. The Berlin wall coming down.
Who knows whether the film will ever be translated or even subtitled. German films probably need to be bigger for that to happen – like Lola Rennt or the recent Good Bye, Lenin that made it to arts cinemas in English speaking countries.
