Trains

213 words

When going by train there are zillions of choices for the way you sit these days. Smoking, Non-Smoking, Quiet Zone, Mobile Phone Zone, Seats facing each other, Seats that don't... This kind of variety is nice – as long a the train isn't too full. Once it starts being crowded, the choice usually ceases to exist as you'll be happy to have any seat at all.

I used to prefer seats facing other seats with a table in between. That's quite handy as you can write stuff, put your computer on the table and don't have stare at the back of seat. But again, once the train is full of people and all seats around a table a taken, this isn't quite as handy. The tables are too small to actually put a whole sheet of paper or computer on your half of it (and I won't even start talking about food scraps that people left). Similarly you can't really stretch out your legs if someone's sitting opposite of you as they may have bags or legs of their own where you want to put yours.

Hence in a crowded situation, sitting in traditional rows may actually be preferable. You can stretch out your legs, you have your own 'full-size' fold down table &c.
