I am about to go and see 'Collateral' [IMDB], some Hollywood flick in a minute. As I probably won't be overwhelmed by it, I thought I could write the 'review' before actually going, drawing from the reviews I've read so for and my dislike for Tom Cruise: The film will be solid Hollywood fare with some action and even some nice shots. The city is supposed to be depicted nicely and the characters are a bit distant. Tom Cruise still sucks, but he's been much worse. Voilà.
As for Tom Cruise, he's not just a Scientology jerk, but also a bad actor. The only film in which he didn't make me puke was Magnolia where I found him very much in character. His other films would have been better off without him (and I'm sure someone could've been found for Magnolia as well as a replacement): The Powerbooks in Mission Impossible were nice and he completley spoiled Eyes Wide Shut.
I haven't been to the cinema for ages – well, weeks at least. That's sad. So I had to go for a change. Not having a better choice is the bad thing about living in a place as small and dead as Göttingen. Sure, we do have arts cinemas, but they're always very late on presenting the films and with their daily changes in schedules, it's quite easy to miss a film. (Two of the semi-arts cinemas in town with a weekly schedule have been bought by the big chain, and one of them has been closed since).
A particular example for that is the film Old Boy which we've been wanting to see for weeks now. And I think it's just not coming here, and it's not in the video store yet either. So I went and checked the good old file sharing networks. And while it's always said that the internet is full of smut, I've never taken that too seriously – dismissing it as hysterical and pointing out that nobody will bump into stuff he didn't look for to begin with. I'll just say that Old Boy is a fairly broad search term that gaves several screenfuls of smut before very scarce occurences of what I was looking for were listed. That caught me a bit off-guard. Perhaps I'll check out those parental controls after all.
I haven’t seen it, but friends I trust inform me that Jamie Foxx gives a career-making performance.
He definitely is the best actor in sight. (Although not seamlessly good, I’d say).
The film also used a bit too much coarse/out of focus filming for my taste and the ‘climax’ situation was a bit too easy to anticipate.
Favourite quote: It wasn’t me who killed him. The bullets and the falling out of the window did it. Now go and tell the NRA.
