I don’t really know what the point of this is but it appears that you can type the n-th ASCII character in the range from 1 through 26 in Cocoa applications by holding the control and option keys and then pressing the n-th character of the alphabet.
So if you can remember that, say, ‘form feed’ is character number 12 and can remember that L is the 12th character of the alphabet, then you just found an extra-convenient method to enter it.
Or so.
