Lock breakage

157 words

In the neverending trend of things breaking just because I use them, I recently saw the door lock of my mum’s car break. That must have happened while driving rather than while using the lock. Gave me an opportunity to explore the genre ‘photography inside car doors’ while trying to find out what exactly is wrong.

Broken lock inside a car door

Allegedly those parts break quite frequently and the newer parts have a more stable design. Which ‘unfortunately’ meant that more than just the basic connection piece needs to be exchanged. Wonderful.

Speaking about keys: Read the text by Bruce Schneier about legal systems vs. security and be sure to follow his links about cracking locks. They make you think that locks are primarily there for making you feel good. And that quite a few of them can be opened by applying a bit of pressure while wiggling around a bit. Makes me wonder whether it’s really worth fixing the car’s lock…
