Ads

94 words

During a talk today, I stumbled upon a peculiar abuse of words. The speaker claimed to make a commercial for a particular mathematical technique he employs. The words commercial and advertisement seem to be used interchangeably these days. Just looking at them, however, suggests that commercials should be – um – commercial in some way.

Now I can think of few things less commercial than techniques in some particular branch of mathematics. As he surely wanted to evangelise this technique, perhaps using the word advertise would have been more suitable, literally.

I blame television.
