2lmc drift off into a debate on newsreaders, favouring MT Newswatcher in the end.
While I haven't used the news groups for a while now, I fondly remember using MacSOUP. It's a very plain application that many people find hard to start using. But it has got great graphical threading. The only problem with it these days is that it hasn't made the transition to OSX too gracefully. In particular, it's about a zillion times faster in Classic mode.
As for clicking on post IDs – MacSOUP has been doing that for eons. It's not particularly cool but can be quite useful. Actually I wrote a little script to smarten this up in MacSOUP last year. It will open the article in Google groups in case it's not available in MacSOUP's local archive. The curious can download it from our folder of unfinished unsupported goodies.
Another news reader worth mentioning may be Halime. It looked very promising the last time I checked.
