GMail

201 words

I started using that GMail thing a while ago. Particularly since they started letting you use POP and SMTP, through an encrypted connection. I found that quite convenient.

The only thing I started to dislike is that they seem to replace my From: address for every e-mail I send through them. Not only is that annoying but it also doesn’t work well with Apple’s encryption and signature stuff as I don’t have a key for my GMail address. So I’m not too happy and may go back to my traditional method of getting and sending mail.

But my largest complaint at this stage is, that, while GMail does provide a very efficient spam filter, recently I found it regularly keeping at least a message per day as spam which obviously wasn’t. That’s just not acceptable. Particularly for a service that’s remote, which doesn’t automatically sync with your address book and the spam mailbox of which you can’t quickly skim for ‘lost’ messages.

Finally, a question to Mac users, particularly those using Safari and even more those using Safari with PithHelmet. Do you sometimes have problems logging into GMail’s web site as well? I tend to be a bit annoyed by that.

Yes I have problems with GMail with Safari and PithHelmet. A little birdy told me it’s a cookie issue. Try playing with that in the Pith sitewide preference for GMail.

I’ve had the following problems with Gmail and Safari:

  1. It stops at the “Loading” screen. Solution: Hit refresh.

  2. When using PithHelmet, I can’t log in. Instead it just loops back to the login screen. Solution: In the PithHelmet Rule Editor, locate the rule for gmail.google.com (or add a new rule if there isn’t one). Check “Enable Site Preferences”, go to the Security tab, and “Allow All” cookies.
