Other things that may or may not deserve some attention:
- While I still don't see the point of blogging conferences, they do seem to make good photo opportunities. Just keep this one around in case anyone claims you can't have a Mac because no-one is using them. Thanks to Apple for making their toys easy to spot. Thanks to Dave for the link.

Joel Spolsky on the importance of Unicode, stating, among other things and plugging his own software, that supporting Unicode isn't that hard and everybody who doesn't do it should be hit with a stick. Let me just plug our own software that's actually Unicode related, before going on... While what Joel says isn't big news, it still hasn't reached many programmers and web content creators. So if someone who gets more attention than me, say, makes these points that may be a good thing. This link and more from here.

Peace nobel prize for Iranian muslim lawyer. Somehow the peace nobel prize frequently seems more significant than the science ones.

I am not a sports person. But I do have a sweet spot for Rugby. Because of the ruthless violence, perhaps. The rugby world cup started yesterday. Naturally, I'll be in favour of South Africa. Although I've heard that they haven't been doing too well lately. Looking at the countries participating is a nice exercise in getting to know countries that frequently slip people's attention. The Guardian has a nice web site on the topic, inlcuding a round up of what the players do and useful information on the participating countries, including a McDonald's count and the sheep to human ratio.

Another report on Guantánamo bay. These don't fail to upset me, even when objective. I am not an eye-for-an-eye person. But I'd count locking everyone responsible for this in the same way as a fun thing to do. Art?!

The Guardian on band The Darkness. Dan pointed me to that band a while ago – ages before I first saw them mentioned in Germany anyway. They're touted as metal sometimes. And they try to sound like it. Pete, however, said it's clearly Glam. He may have a point.

And what about Chicks on Speed then? Not particularly brilliant but fun nontheless. Featuring both Peaches and an iPod in their We don't play Guitars video.

If you know some German and a bit more you'll recognise Atzenhausen and Ischenrode as potentially funny names for places. Even better: Buses to both of them leave at the bus stop in front of our department.

A fun review at ars technica for a mostly superfluous product giving you more information that you'd want. I seems to be capable of displaying a HAL-style eye on your desktop, though.
