- 2lmc (who cracked so quickly that I hardly noticed their absence) ridicule people writing on their screens. Be careful guys – I used to do exactly that when playing some kind of oil drilling game on my Atari ST. Marking the strategically important places on screen for later reference was a good way to compensate my lack of skill...

Reminds me of the question how to tell that a [your local group of ridiculed people here] had used a computer.
-
With the answer being the Tipp-Ex on the screen.

Cool – a fully analog digital sundial. €91, though. (via Juha Haataja).

If anyone reading this understands how the fonts within one family are ordered in OS X's Font Palette or in Font book, please comment. All I could figure so far is that the order isn't even the same in those two places and that getting it right (i.e. Roman to be first and automatically selected) isn't trivial – read I have no idea whatsoever how to do it.

John Gruber
wildly overestimating the number of characters they'll let you engrave into an iPod (my misunderstanding - John only suggests alternate defacements) .

Also carefully described there: annoying clickthrough in the Finder.
-
And while moving in the area of the Finder's 'all-new' sidebar thingy – let me also point out that it is somewhat strange that the sidebar comes with toolbar-style (i.e. no perspective, light from top) icons rather than Finder buttons. Not only does this make for a strange mix – it also makes it harder to recognise the documents, pictures (both appallingly ugly, imo), music &c folders.

While I think removing DRM from bought iTunes songs is a good idea of future-proofing your purchases, I find the whole press that hack gets a little too much. Not only does it seem this is a mere question of time and poking around in QuickTime rather than a strike of genius, it also destroys the image of the 'innocent Norwegian teen hacker': How did he get the protected iTMS files to begin with?
-
And when writing about this issue, the whole debilitated press gets it wrong as with any technical issue. What I find most upsetting is their tendency to confuse iTunes, the brilliant easy to use music juke box, and the iTunes Music Store, the addition to iTunes 4 that lets you buy songs with creepy DRM. While the clever ones may manage to sort-of get the problems of DRM right – they'll go on and blame it on iTunes which I learned today is
exemplary in its hostility towards consumers
Der vom Computerkonzern Apple im April eröffnete Musikhandelsplatz "iTunes" ist laut Jon "ein Musterbeispiel an Verbraucherfeindlichkeit".
Ahem.

Eeek, the lock on my bike is becoming harder to unlock every day. It works without force but you'll have to find just the right way to insert the key and turn it. Funny enough – when you get it right, you immediately feel it when starting to turn the key. In the way you feel you got the shot right when playing pool before things actually happen.

when I played gunship (a helicopter simulation) on my 8086 i would mark the route on the screen so I would now where i had been and thus no more enemy units where.

Gruber’s not referring to engraving, but to text that was stenciled onto Apple’s iPod billboards using spray paint.

Michael: Thanks for pointing that out.
I guess living in a place where there are no Apple billboard ads made me ignore the obvious…
