Timid Tiger Live

750 words on

Timid Tiger and a Pile of Pipers Cover Art Björn, Susanne and me went to see Timid Tiger yesterday night at Café Glocksee, the same place where we saw Chikinki in in Hannover. Despite us being late for the worthwhile reason that we had a nice dinner with some massive steaks, we arrived just as the support band, Werle und Stankowski started to play.

As the name suggests, they are two guys making music. One of them playing acoustic guitar and singing and the other one ‘playing’ electronic stuff. In fact, I kept thinking that he was quite superfluous as I keep failing to see the point why someone needs to be on stage to occasionally press a button on a synthesizer (or other electronic instrument). And I fail even more to see why he needs to jump around frantically all the time when he’s doing hardly anything. And while the whole singing and guitar playing wasn’t too bad, I didn’t like it much either. So this support band didn’t win too much sympathy.

But then, after the obligatory break, Timid Tiger came on. While their music sounded a bit too electronic to me on their record, they were still five young guys playing mostly ‘honest’, i.e. analogue instruments. Only one of them played a keyboard and the guitarist, who wore his guitar extremely – and imo fashionably – low, pressed keys on another keyboard as well – but, more notably, he also operated some of the funny puppets and flowers on stage at times and took charge of singing into some fun distortion effect for some songs.

The singer wore a T-shirt with what looked like a Prince logo. Possibly because if he looked like a girl he might look like Prince. And the bassist looked seriously stoned throughout the gig. We couldn’t see the drummer too well from where we stood but he looked very young when we could see him and did his job well. As they all did. And despite my initial judgement that they sound overly electronic, they completely rocked the night. Not the partially softish song of the record, but proper noise instead.

Timid Tiger are definitely a band that’s worth to be seen live as – for my taste at least – they sound much better in person than they do on record (just like Das Pop, say) and I really recommend to go and see them if they happen to play near your place.

Five peaches in the discotheque
come together in the ??? parade –
and I know it’s getting late.
Four surprises in the afternoon.
where’s my handkerchief when I’m alone?
And I have another drink of you.
My my my my my my my Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you ever come back to me?
Love Boat, Love Boat
Won’t you please set me free?
Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you ever come back to me?

Two tickets and a tropical day
spent the holiday on marmelade ???
and I know it’s not too late.
Monday morning on a Sunday night
Well can’t we meet when everything is white?
But I know I cannot wait for
my my my my my my Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you ever come back to me?
Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you please set me free?
Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you ever come back to me?
I’m a drunken fool of love,
so set me free.

Oh, you’re so busy with clothes,
and I know that you won’t find time anymore.
So I’ll go out on my own
and the wind will sweep me away like a mound.
In a couple of days, riding on a horse there, ???
I’m not gonna go anyway.
Oh, you’re so busy with clothes,
and I know that you won’t find time anymore.
Oh my Love.
Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you ever come back to me?
Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you please set me free?
Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you ever come back to me?
I’m a drunken fool of love,
so set me free.
Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you ever come back to me?
Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you please set me free?
Love Boat, Love Boat
won’t you ever come back to me?
Oh my love.

Timid Tiger – Love Boat

Amusing end note: Timid Tiger played their song Tiger is not a Bird here… and The Robocop Kraus played A Man’s not a Bird on Thursday. Too bad Broadcast aren’t playing around here soon…
